To me, the Aftermath looks quite devastating in a lot of areas...

Sadly, most, if not all of the people are affected by this from what I'm reading and seeing in the videos...

There has been a report of 6 deaths currently too... :-(

Anything over 100mph winds can be pretty scary.

There is nothing in those pics that indicate a cat 5 at all.

Any hurricane will do that, even a cat 1.

Cat 5 damage: There are no trees. All have either been ripped out or snapped off at waist level. Nothing like that in these pics, nothing at all.

Well, it does state in the article that trees had been split and some ripped out...

Planes have been piled onto each other...

The aftermath pics and videos prove that there was quite some serious damage done and people lost their lives during this as well as people have lost their homes...

Cat 5 or not, the evidence of the Hurricane is obvious that this is a serious hurricane...

It is definitely not something I'd like to find myself caught in off guard nor for other's to be harmed/killed from it...

Don’t live in a mobile home / trailer…

I see a bunch of trailers and modular homes destroyed. And a bunch of roofs torn off of large older buildings. And a bunch of antiquated wooden telephone poles snapped over. None of that proves how devastating the hurricane was. it just proves how outdated and insufficient the area's building codes and infrastructure were.

The 75% of residents of Cameron and Lake Charles that evacuated will have no infrastructure to return to.

No electricity, no water, no gas and it's Hot. It could be months before services are restored - another multi-billion dollar severe weather event. This should make about 13 this year...so far.

Tropics are hot right now as expected. 3 tropical waves in the Atlantic being monitored and a tropical storm in the eastern Pacific, which hopefully brings some moisture/rain to the SW.

I am really happy they did not get the 20+ foot storm surge that was predicted. One forecast said the storm surge would go 40 miles inland! They were calling it an unsurvivable storm surge plus the Cajun Navy was down to 75 boats instead of the 1000 they had for Katrina and would be of much help. Prayers answered!

Wow... I had not heard of the predicted 20+ foot storm surge!

That would be the final straw that broke the camels back with how devastating things are enough from this Hurricane...

A strong cat 4 hurricane without much of a storm surge.

Why?

Laura was not a category 4 hurricane at landfall. The maximum gust recorded was 55 m/sec, 123 MPH. The maximum sustained wind was 41 m/sec, 92 MH. That makes Laura a cat 1 at landfall.

We don't really know if a 20 foot surge happened or not.

What we do know is..

It was quite an extraordinary forecast. A 9 to 10 foot surge was recorded near Cameron. That's where the storm came ashore.

However, the strongest surge would have been east of that and due to the western coastline of wildlife refuges and swamp lands there really wasn't anything, structurally, to gauge a 20 foot surge. There may have been a 15 foot report in one of the little communities east of Cameron.

A 10foot surge can be deadly if one isn't prepared and likely why 75% evacuated..how many lives did that save?

Hmmm... interesting... I was just going by what the articles/news stated... I at least thought that it was a Cat 3 or 4 judging by all of the damage done...
