If they didn't vacate the warrant they would have to remain stationed with him next to his bed until he medically recovers to the point that the jail can take him. Getting rid of the warrant just allows the police to not spend all the money with a cop posted. It makes a lot of sense financially for the police and to free up manpower. They do this all the time with hospitalized folks.
