Mezzo Mezzage; Thursday Thoughts..
No Midweek Mezzorant this week, but a personal experience and some thoughts added to that. Apologies upfront for the length of it, but when I write, I do so from the heart and it is everyone's own choice to read it or not.

A few weeks ago, I had applied for a call center job through a temp employment agency, to do some contact and source tracing at the local Health Service, for people who had tested positive. It required empathy and communication skills and they needed LOTS of people, fast. Terrible pay, but I thought it would be a good way to help out a bit in this crisis we are all going through, whether you believe in it or not.

Got a reply, that they believe I don't have enough experience with social client contacts. LOL. Having worked in a management role within customer service and planning, with a major aspect in communication on all levels, from client to workers, in crisis situations and beyond, that sounded really odd.

I replied to them that they really made a cartoon out of themselves with that reply and should have come up with a different excuse to not hire someone who is nearly 60 (in a few days), with lots of in the field experience and skills in that area, who was more than willing to accept their terrible ridiculous pay per hour, just for the sake to mean something in society in this crisis. And to do their home work next time...

FNamatuers1

I should have included that meme lmao. I know, it's a bit of a pity, because I honestly thought that was something that I would have loved doing and since they needed a lot of people, chances would be high. But as some know, I already decided that I will be retiring early, in June next year, 9 more months to go. So no pressure there, but what a utter bullshit excuse that was, lol.

Actually, I thought it was kind of funny, since it totally fits into the thinking process of how most recruiters and HR departments look at hiring people these days.

I know, funny is a relative observation as well, because I know that a lot of people have it much worse than me and are very much dependent on having a job, no matter what age they are. Even more in times of crisis like these. So no disrespect meant regarding that whatsoever. I always wish everyone nothing but the best in life, in health, in wealth and in being safe.

In most fields age is most likely the biggest knock out factor, despite recruiters and other employment gurus on LinkedIn and other platforms claiming it is not. I truly believe they only put that stand there to get more visibility and clientele for themselves.

Anyway, the positive side of it is that it gives me food for thoughts, like this Mezzage. I can't claim to be the ultimate expert in this, because there are many people much older and wiser than me, who have suffered war, loss and destruction, but if there is one thing I have learned as an up-and-coming expert when it comes to age, it is that we have always conquered even the darkest times in our lives and this time it will be no different.

Most of you who read this can for sure find examples in life, where they thought they would not make it out on top, but still did. Not easy at all, life sometimes (and sometimes much more often than that) plain sucks, on whatever level and in whatever field. But I have said it so often and probably people get tired of hearing it, but at weakest moments we find strength. In ourselves and those around us who mean nothing but good for us and our society.

When you go from that mindset, nothing can really defeat you. Negative influences like hate, racism, violence, degrading and ridiculing someone's lifestyle or whatever else that goes around in our personal lives and society, may try to divide us or make us abandon hope and give up, but as long as we stick to our core and go from determination, encouragement and the will to survive, individual and together, nothing can defeat us.

So keep believing in yourself and those around you in your own circle of influence. Times will change for the better. It might take a while and test our beliefs, but they will, always. We will not fail. We haven't done so in the past and we won't do so now or in the future. No matter what.

Feel free to share your own personal thoughts and experiences on this, or just use it to vent what is on your mind.

As usual with my threads, let's keep it decent, without name calling or insulting your fellow posters. And this is not a thread to discuss whether the corona virus is real or a hoax. There are plenty of threads where you can express your own thoughts about it, so please go there to express your feelings on that.

Thanks!

Man, I always love reading anything you write. I'm at a point in life and with everything going on "out there" I just really can't bring myself to bother anymore.

You just never know when or who you are going to trigger and what may or may not trigger them, it's just not worth it.

I hate this feeling because I have always enjoyed interacting with my fellow humans but now, it just doesn't seem worth it.

I really hope these feeling abate at some time because frankly they are eating my very soul!

Thanks again for all you bring to the forum!

I don't know about that my dear, but thank you for saying that. hugs

Most of it is just the use of common sense and normal behavior I guess. Having an open eye for the people around you in real life is nothing but normal to me. It is how I was raised.

I am trying not to get negatively influenced by what I see happening on subjective media or how our so called leaders, from both sides of the political spectrum, try to market the public. I don't need their marketing games. I go from instinct and what I notice in my own circle of influence. Makes things much more fair and objective. And of course, there is a lot wrong in our world.

But I also don't blame others for not agreeing with me on that stand. Looking at the star rating on this thread, I guess there are quite a few who don't agree. No problem. People are entitled to their own opinion, even though I wished those who do not agree would put it in words and not in stars. I never post my threads for ratings, I leave that to the media. But I guess that's another way our society has changed. We rate everything nowadays, likes, dislikes, smileys, memes. Easier than discussing or talking to each other probably.

Frankly, I wish everyone well. ;-) And I truly mean that.

Thanks for replying! hf

And for me, the perspective of doing something I like in 9 months, without the pressure, is really promising. Looking forward to that. hf

Thank you my friend and the same to you! hf

I admit, it is difficult, also in our own environment, to determine what you can still say or do or not. Making a general remark to a complete stranger, may now get you a total different reaction than say twenty years ago. It for sure has changed our behavior. And that sucks if you have always used to do interact with people, like you say.

But even then, maybe even more now, we need to keep interacting. Of course, situation are different, depending on where you live, the neighborhood and social atmosphere and such, but if we allow all the negativity that is fed to us through politics and (social) media, to influence and change our core, we become nothing but artificial intelligent robots.

I for one refuse to live that way. I know from experience that when times are rough, people do reach out to each other and get together. If we can connect in negativity, like we do so often nowadays, then why shouldn't we be able to connect through positivity and encouragement instead?

Maybe because it is easier to push than to pull. It is all in the mindset my friend. Stay safe and sane out there!

Re: Mezzo Mezzage; Thursday Thoughts..
Another example:

Over the past weeks and with the coming months ahead, I have asked myself whether I should still post a Christmas Giveaway this year on GLP.

After the past one, during this whole crisis, I have still helped quite a lot of people, as best as I could. I have stopped now, because of my own situation, being unemployed since May last year and current resources mostly gone, but I am having doubts about the next one. Not money wise, because that will be relatively okay, especially with the help of others who contributed greatly last year as well, but atmosphere wise. I find it more and more difficult to get around the current atmosphere and with the US elections coming up, I can't see how this will improve on here and I know it is a very challenging task for Trinity and his mods to keep a lid on that as much as is reasonable and not conflicting with freedom of speech.

I know there are a lot of people who are genuine and struggle, most likely the silent majority, but I also hate hypocrisy, especially from myself. I also know we do need counter weight in such challenging times, so that might be the reason to still do it. Punishing the silent majority of genuine ones for the behavior of the vocal minority of bad ones is not my style.

One voice of reason, that I value very, very much said:

"..I'm also concerned that there are gonna be a LOT more hurting people out there on GLP this year. Covid has really done damage to people's lifestyles and bank accounts, and IF we manage to make it to Thanksgiving, I'm pretty sure people will be wondering what they'll do for Christmas. Most American families wouldn't do well having to go back to our grandparent's idea of Christmas being more a religious feast, with gatherings of family and friends and food and drink, with small gifts being bestowed mainly on the little ones. I personally love that idea, but my grandkids would look shocked if we gave them a stocking with fruit and nuts and the small toy or something like that.."

I agree to that. In no way pretending that we can solve all the hurt and misery with a relatively small budget like that, but I also know that little gestures often make a big difference, if only in people's mind and mood, giving them hope and encouragement.

So as things stand now and assuming we are still here and not hit by an asteroid or done in by some other event (GLP effect needed) there will be another Christmas Giveaway, in the light of my stand in life on this and with the help of other beautiful souls.

Just to be clear. Christmas Giveaway, lol. Posted around 17 December. Not before, so please no need to ask for any financial help now. Of course, who ever wants can always contact me if they need to vent or an ear, but my budget is on life support as we speak. But we are making it, just like all of us will, with each other's help! hf

And for the one who gave me this red karma..

"60 years old, unemployed, and you are going to retire! From what? LOL"

.. and apparently does not have the courage to speak up in this thread; I don't really need to answer to you, but I still will.

In my active and for me successful and satisfying career of 40+ years, that ended abruptly due to bankruptcy last year because of some greedy investors, I have built up enough funds to retire early.

I don't need a lot of money in the bank to be able to lead a decent life and be free to do what I want next. Volunteer work and start something that makes me happy. I get by, but I also don't brag about it, in the knowledge that that is a luxury position compared to many others around me. I have always helped others, in any shape or form and will continue and be able to do that when I retire next year.

You would have gotten the same answer if you would have had the courage to ask me that in person instead of making it a negative point in red.

Maybe you can take that away as a learning point to yourself. hf

Luv your Mezzo Mezzage. What kept popping up in my mind while reading is that maybe it was not meant to be.

It may start out being a job where you could help people but turn into something where they require you to do tougher and possibly hurtful things.

Hope you have a wonderful and blessed day. hugs hf

Thanks for the personal write up.

Not sure I got anything out of it except the to positive to be doubtful. Well, except about age "discrimination". My father was in his late 50's when he moved back to Texas, even with a Electrical Engineering BA no one would look at him for work.
The stress of loosing his job years prior and poor health choices got him so stressed he developed bladder cancer.
He died at 62 working till his last day.

The other thing about finding a position you didn't think you were qualified for is how much you get to LEARN. Never discount that part. There is personal gain at the same time you are able to help more people than you had planned or imagined possible.

hello Mezzo and firstly Happy Birthday for a few days time.

With all the divisions going on (lack of respect for other peoples different opinions to your own) i have felt that I have wanted to go and live in a cave, away from the world, rather like some of the yogis.

Your post that relates with me the most was the one about getting red karma.

I moved to the countryside a year before I retired and so took temp or contract jobs. A temp job finished one month before my retirement so I ended up going into pension age as unemployed! A month later I started a new contract and went on to do several more contracts with the same company over the next five years. I hope the same happens for you, beautiful person.

I was fortunate that I started my last employment at 50 and it flowed directly into the job I retired from last November. That way, I missed most of the age discrimination - they will always find a way other than saying, "You're too old for us to hire - which is what they really mean. At 69, I'm not going to look for another job. If one comes for me, I might take it (and that has happened before). But I won't search. I'm just going to make do with the lower income and am engaged in ways to make it work for us. Alas, at 59, you've probably got a need for the income, but as my husband says, "Don't let the bastards grind you down."

Years ago, a very wise mentor taught me that I am entirely in charge of three things: my actions, my words, and my attitude. If I take actions for the good, it helps me. What I speak determines what people think of me and if I speak helpful things, I can give someone a better day. When I do those things, my attitude becomes positive. When I make the decision to be happy, I am at least content, even in adversity. You sound like you know those things already, my dear Mezzo, but they were revelations to me. You're entirely right when you say that with the proper mindset nothing can or will defeat you.

You'll find the right place - their refusal saved you from something. And if you're retiring soon anyway, that's great. Ignore anyone who says you will be bored. My garden, my hobbies, and my dogs keep me so busy that I don't know how I ever found the time to work for anyone else.

Have a blessed week!

Luv your Mezzo Mezzage. What kept popping up in my mind while reading is that maybe it was not meant to be.

It may start out being a job where you could help people but turn into something where they require you to do tougher and possibly hurtful things.

Hope you have a wonderful and blessed day. hugs hf

Thank you my dear NOLA. hugs

And you most likely are right. It at least gives me more time to be available for other things going on at this moment as well.

Thank you for always being a light. Have a great day! hf

In any case be cool and be good!

So sorry to hear about your dad my friend. hugs Thinking back at that must still be hurtful. My dad passed away at age 56, much too young, like yours. Worked hard all his life to provide for the family. Not easy with six kids.

So I guess what we can also take from rejection, is that we need to keep putting things in perspective, how difficult that at times is and how much pressure there might be to earn money to provide for your family. And I know, one personal situation is much more different than the other.

Positivism is a great asset. Not only for ourselves, but also for others around us. It encourages and motivates. I am a big fan of silent movies and slapstick like Laurel & Hardy, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.. One song comes to mind.

And that is how it will be. We WILL find our way, always!

Stay safe and sane my friend. Thanks for replying! hf

The other thing about finding a position you didn't think you were qualified for is how much you get to LEARN. Never discount that part. There is personal gain at the same time you are able to help more people than you had planned or imagined possible.

(this part you already do anyway..just so you know)

I hear you DB. With an open mind we always learn as we go, that is another great thing in life. I have always stood in life like that. The knife cuts at both ends, for sender and receiver.

Other opportunities will come. I am convinced of that. hugs

Re: Mezzo Mezzage; Thursday Thoughts..
hello Mezzo and firstly Happy Birthday for a few days time.

Thank you my dear neighbor across the North Sea! I always so appreciate your words. hugs

And it is exactly the route I intend to take. No pressure, finding something I really like. I know I don't really have to work anymore, but I also want to still be of value in society.

It is quite a mental transition phase between working 40+ years and getting used to being home 24/7, but I have never felt down or stressed about it. New things will come.

Thanks again for your beautiful words. And for being you. Hope you are staying safe and healthy out there in the country. It must be beautiful out there!

Re: Mezzo Mezzage; Thursday Thoughts..

So true what you wrote about age discrimination my dear. I have seen so many rejections in the past year with the most ridiculous reasons, even if the job fitted 100+ % to their description. At one time I even wrote a column about it in Dutch, where I had won the Rejections Award 2019.

I will have to translate it one day in English, but this part may already say how much the world of applying has changed and how I put it in perspective:

".. Nowadays applying for jobs is a profession in itself, with a complete industry woven around it. Recruiters, workshop guides, job coaches, network consultants, elevator pitch experts and assessment assistance consultants. And if the going gets tough and you get into a post-traumatic job application syndrome, you can always turn to motivation mindset managers and mental fitness whisperers.. "

Funny thing is that there were people, who really thought I had won that Award, lol. lmao

And fully agree what you say about being content and how state of mind influences not only ourselves, but also others around us. And if the choice is between negative and positive, I will always choose positive. Even though I know that is really not easy for all. Different situations, different characters, stress, pressure. And I understand that completely. And I am at least glad that in some way I can try to contribute to make someone's mood a bit better.

I am at a stage where I am getting used to being retired in less than a year. It is a relief as well, also in the knowledge that financially it will be quite okay, based on the career I had. So I consider myself lucky in that respect. It is more getting used to the thought of not working anymore at age 60, at least not in the rhythm like I used to.

But like you and many other say, it gives me the opportunity to find what I really love to do. And no fear of getting bored either. I hear many retired friends and colleagues say they are short of time now, lol.

Anyway, thanks for your beautiful response. Enjoy your Friday and weekend. Much love!! hugs

But we are making it, just like all of us will, with each other's help! hf
