Nawty, that’s a pipe dream. Two years? Try decades. Even if we get spread under control.... those already infected have yet to get through the long term.

And the continued reduced birth rate is gonna bottle neck if we can’t fix that too.

More details from the meeting about J&J today.

[link to yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com (secure)]

The halt is to be extended until the risk/benefit situation can be further assessed.

The amount of patients who were treated with heparin even though it’s harmful in this situation makes it really clear the halt was necessary.

Re: COVID-19 News, Info, Discussion /// Tracking the Spread of the Virus and its Effects /// October Lockdown for UK (pg. 774)
Name one virus that has mutated into a super bug because of vaccines, please. I'm curious why suddenly this vaccine will create some crazy deadly version and we don't see Super Rabies, or Super Mumps. I'm curious why this is suddenly a worry.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

It's been a worry ever since the vaccine trials showed the vaccine doesn't have a high effectiveness in preventing infection when exposed to the virus. That's why the AC brought up the example of a non-sterilizing vaccine. The vaccines for covid are non-sterilizing which means they help to prevent symptoms from an acute infection but aren't good at stopping the infection itself. This is a worry because so long as the virus has a chance to infect, it will have a chance to mutate... and when it mutates the evidence we have is it can mutate into something more aggressive, pathogenic and has a better chance at immune evasion also.

It's not straightforward to make similarities between this virus others like those you mentioned because this is a coronavirus and the others are a different type of virus. One big difference is the vaccines that they use for those viruses very likely give people the sterilizing immunity which means people won't be getting infected after vaccination. Those viruses might also be naturally much slower to mutate, or mutations have a harder time surviving/being successful. SarsCov2 is not that kind of virus though, it is mutating quicker and the mutations are successful.

The other thing is the viruses you mentioned have been around for a couple thousand years. When a virus has been in a human population for that long there is not as much room available for the virus to evolve compared to the time when it first emerged.
 Quoting: CoronaCoaster

Influenza vax non-sterilizing. Tetanus vax. 2 examples. Both require boosters. Both have been around a long time. Influenza, even though vaxxed for, causes the majority of pandemics. New strains appear, not because of previous vaccinations, but because of natural selection.

Personally, I think the vax for COVID will do more harm from a psychological point of view, giving people a false sense of security. And, like flu, different strains will be affected by the vax differently. Pandemic-wise, we are a year, maybe 2 from anything resembling normal.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

The problem is it's strongly suspected that at least one of the sarscov2 variants came from someone who was infected and had antibody treatment. Now think about this in the context of the vaccines - people will still be getting infected and have a degree of antibodies = (fill in the blank). Also the scientists themselves have suggested the vaccinateds could put pressure on the virus which could lead to new variants.

Therefore it seems a very real possibility that the vaccines won't give the level of protection needed to end the clusterfuck of further new variants. This novel coronavirus is in the early stages of its evolution according to virologists. The evidence is there that newer variants are not only more transmissible, but more deadly. Allegedly the vaccine would give a higher level of antibody to the average person compared with natural infection... With the vaccine rollout this could mean the trend to more tranmissible, deadly/severe variants is faster than it would have been otherwise. It could mean booster rollouts won't keep up with the new variants or if they do keep up there is still going to be an unacceptable level of suffering and death. At the very least I expect hospitals and ICUs to be overwhelmed every winter from now on. And that's before we even take into account the chronic issues from people who have already been infected from the virus.

The current vax, or no vax, either option doesn't seem good. There would have to be a much better, more capable vaccine than what we have now for me to have confidence that the virus threat would recede to a suitable level. Until then, minked is the prevailing state of affairs.

Good video from the BBC on the situation in India.

Doesn't look good on the hospital front!

10 to 11 million cases in 66 days.

11 to 12 million in 34 days.

12 to 13 million in 15 days......

With near 200,000 new cases a day now that will be the next million in 5 days!

Have we seen growth like this any where else??

[link to www.bbc.co.uk (secure)]

India's Covid caseload has risen sharply in the past few weeks.

The country's been reporting more than 150,000 cases a day. In January and February daily cases fell below 20,000.

So, how did India get from relative calm to its new crisis?

Hard to say. There could have been growth like that at the start of the pandemic in some countries but we'll never know the true numbers because PCR tests weren't widely available back then to pick up many cases from people who weren't hospitalized.

But in terms of sheer numbers of people increasingly affected and infected each day, I think India probably has the record now. A few weeks ago they were behaving like many in Brazil did, behaving like the virus didn't exist. Rather predictably a new variant then popped up in India and the rest is history.
