That's a good theory. I didn't think of that initially.
The length of time he held it up and the way he said "so you can say 'where's my shoe stuff'" kind of made me think this was a direct message to those others who he's associated with, letting them know people are questioning this subject and to be aware that people are coming to speak to them.
