West Virginia - Southern or not?

Nope. West Virginia and Kentucky are just hillbillies.

Wv is it’s own thing not north not south. It’s a special place.

Is it tho? Special? Maybe...just not in the conventional sense.

Well take a look at the map of the state. its a weird shape and has number of different ways of life. Part of it is north of Pittsburgh, which is as north as north can be.

Separated from the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1863 over slavery.

It's neither north or south.

It sided with the Union so it could split away from Virginia.

It is a unique and special place

In WV, the southern drawl gets more pronounced the farther south you travel.

Wheeling, damn near Yankee sounding. Charleston, it begins to set in and becomes thicker in 10 mile increments from there.

Neither the north or the south are willing to take ownership of West by Gawd.

Towns in West Virginia are farther north than Pittsburg - AND - you can drive to Canada in less than 8 hours.

If it's "South", it's Shallow South.

A lot of their expressions are Midwestern, but many that are unique to that area as well. Definitely a twang but not Southern really.

Most of the state is below the Mason Dixon line. It’s more southern than northern in its feel.

WV is neutral.

If from the deep south, spent 4 years in WV.

I will say there are southern traits but generally no they are not southern AT ALL.

Depending on the region its either hillbilly or midwestern.
the north is northern and the far north is straight midwest with a meth crisis like no other.

Very few southern traits other than a sense of self reliance.

the food is trash, no good food anywhere in the state, other than a few pizza joints run by italian families. the BBQ is a joke.

if they had a good BBQ tradition I would lump them in with the best of the southern states

I lived there in the late 60 through the mid 70s. It had massive chemical industry sprawl and of course, coal. I remember cold, cold winters with enough snow to make snow angels in our front yard, every single year.

After that I moved to the deep south (FL/GA) - with that said, not much seems southern about my WV memories by comparison.

Not much in the way of memorable food but I will say Tudors sandwich biscuits are pretty freaking awesome

The buckle of the bible belt, the northernmost southern state and the southernmost northern state …

I lived there for 12 years.

I think the slaw is because they got confused about what is sauerkraut.

The Pepi is the best! Not sure why some try to make a distinction between hillbilly and the south as the south is full of hillbillies, TN, Northern Georgia, western NC.

Surprised that only one person brought that up. If your definition of Southern is former Confederate state, it is southern. If your definition is cultural...

...then I'm with the poster below who said "Mountain people", and the latin about Mountain people always being free. That's almost a universal truth, except for the Tibetans. They were so caught up in feudalism that they failed to raise an army of their own to fight the PLA. On the other side of the Himalayas are Ghurkas, real mountanin warriors.
