Yes, my mare, you are right. My college history professor did her doctorate on this subject. She went to library archives, and researched the diaries and plantation records, and this is what she found. During this time period, she read about the fears of the plantation owners over slave uprisings that were occurring on the sugar cane plantations in other countries, and came up with a scheme to deter them from killing the masters like they were doing elsewhere. They set the black slaves against the white indentured servants, causing them to hate each other instead of the plantation owners, in a bid for security against being lynched by those they oppressed! They did this by giving special preferential treatment to the black slaves! Like you say, Torchie, the indentured servants had no value after they had to be released, and they were to take their tools with them as part of their indentured service. The masters killed them off before they could cash in every time, and kept the slaves as a cared-for work force of great value!
