What caused the conflict between Hutu and Tutsi?
Generally, the Hutu-Tutsi strife stems from class warfare, with the Tutsis perceived to have greater wealth and social status.

Why did the Hutus hate the Tutsis?
In 1994 and years, leading to the genocide against Tutsis, tribalism, identity politics and extremism was the rule of the land. Bad leaders and power hungry politicians destroyed this country. This is why they hated others by their labels.

>Why did Belgium favor the Tutsis?
Belgian rule reinforced an ethnic divide between the Tutsi and Hutu, and they supported Tutsis political power. Tutsi's skulls were bigger, they were taller, and their skin was lighter. As a result of this, Europeans came to believe that Tutsis had Caucasian ancestry, and were thus "superior" to Hutus.

How did the Tutsis treat the Hutus?
The Tutsi, the minority group, were highly favored, and given privilege and western style education as well as positions enforcing Belgian rule. Meanwhile the Hutu were treated with little respect and restricted to jobs that did not offer opportunity or wealth.

What did the Hutus do to the Tutsis?
The Hutu-controlled government and allied militias slaughtered between 800,000 and one million Tutsis before a Tutsi rebel group overthrew them.

What did the Tutsis do to the Hutus?
Over 100,000 Hutus were also killed, including both moderate Hutus killed by Hutu extremists and those killed by Tutsis in so-called "revenge killings."

How was the Hutu and Tutsi conflict resolved?
It ended only after Tutsi rebels defeated the government. The day after the genocide began, the Tutsi rebel group RPF, led by Paul Kagame, launched an offensive aimed at toppling the Rwandan government. In about one hundred days, the RPF defeated the government forces.

Means of killing
Most of the victims were killed in their own villages or in towns, often by their neighbors and fellow villagers. The militia typically murdered victims with machetes, although some army units used rifles. The Hutu gangs searched out victims hiding in churches and school buildings, and massacred them. Local officials and government-sponsored radio incited ordinary citizens to kill their neighbors, and those who refused to kill were often murdered on the spot: "Either you took part in the massacres or you were massacred yourself."
