If civilization does collapse, obviously mankind will endure trials not seen for centuries.

Those who have no knowledge of how to hunt, fish, survive outdoors, defend themselves, and are innovative, will die.

And, so may the rest of us. I always get a little chuckle out of those wishing for catastrophe. They have no clue.

I have a ton of outdoor survival skills but I'm not sure what good they're going to do me sitting in the middle of a town.

I think that's pretty much how we got to this point.

We gave up, stopped caring, stopped protecting others, and just let go and let it all collapse.

Very close to my current perspective. A Wasted possibility because we always preferred to argue for the differences instead of working for the important stuff that matters and pertains to all. But "Muh freedums, Muh Rights" always win.

Years ago here at GLP I learnt of a very important survival concept called the Drop Dead Distance, which is the max distance a person can walk without water before falling unconscious and never been able to get up again. I get this will be a greatly varying number for every person, but I recall the average number was really shocking at around 40 miles. So, as OP mentions in other answer to the same comment, a desert might be safer, but only if you have plenty of water at hand.
