Smithfield is a whopping 25% of the USA's pork, owned by the Chicoms! Now: Virginia-based meat processor Smithfield Foods is temporarily closing two more plants because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The company said in a statement on Wednesday that its plants in Cudahy, Wisconsin, and Martin City, Missouri, will shutter their doors later this week. The Cudahy dry sausage and bacon plant will be closed for two weeks, while the Martin City plant will be closed indefinitely.
The Martin City plant receives its raw materials from the company's Sioux Falls, South Dakota, processing plant, which Smithfield Foods closed indefinitely earlier this week. Without the materials from the Sioux Falls plant, one of the nation's largest processing facilities, the Martin City plant cannot continue to function, the statement said.
Smithfield Foods, which employs 40,000 people across the U.S., said the two smaller plants are in areas that have seen the spread of COVID-19 and that "a small number of employees at both plants have tested positive" for the virus.
