I grew corn 3 years ago and froze what I didn't eat fresh. 3 years later, I still have a lot of corn in my freezer. That's why I haven't grown any since. So I don't agree with you at all. If you have a way to preserve what you grow and if you have chickens (egss & chicken meat), cows (fresh beef) and a fishing pond (fish to eat), then you will have plenty to eat if you grow a large garden and store what you don't eat fresh.

I think that defeats the whole purpose for hard tack.

People can survive if they have a small farm and garden, but everyone would need to have one for their family, or otherwise participate as part of a co-op, which we all know won't happen.

Too many people find the store shelf with food on it more convenient and have no forethought to realize it won't always be there. Many won't be willing to work for the actual food by planting it and harvesting it themselves, which would be required for sustainability of our current population.

Famine has destroyed civilizations before and will do it again.
