In a SHTF scenario you won't have access to those products, so even if you have some stored it will eventually run out. You need to figure out how to do these things with just the resources in your nearby area. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77569728 You can grow potatoes in cardboard boxes, or old tires or just about anything that will hold dirt. Or in a shtf situation you will hopefully be some place where you have access to dirt. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. That is a law of the universe. *** |

No catching the bolt or gathering little pieces. 3: It is awesome to sift the dirt for those little bitties. They cook up great skins on and they will burst in your mouth like cherry tomatoes. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 54872279 Not sure about your situation, it may not make sense to grow then, but for me, potatoes are well worth it. - Watering takes zero extra time with a proper irrigation setup. Same as all the veggies and fruits. - Potatoes grow like weeds, at least in my garden. I always rotate them though. - A 20# bag of potatoes is not $3.99. - store bought potatoes are limited in variety, lack flavor, and are of dubious lineage. - Potatoes taste hella good and versatile compared to most of the "healthy" veggies I grow. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77569728 Plastic tubs should take a long while to disintegrate and they will provide potatoes even for your descendents next century. As for seeds and so on, I suppose you would do well to have a little quantity of each at home, just in case. Potatoes themselves sprout easily, so if you have a potato.... |

There were years when store bought potatoes were so bad you'd have to whittle half of them away there were so many bad spots. We haven't ever had a problem, always had more than we can eat. We had our own golden German potatos last night, and even after being in storage all winter, they were so sweet. You just can't buy that in the store. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. That is a law of the universe. *** |

I spent my money wisely - so am relying on what is in the house. I am sprouting avocado seeds in a plastic egg carton greenhouse. Innovation! I also find joy in not throwing things away, if they can be used. Or upcycled. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78719836 United States 04/10/2020 08:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My Dad said something about growing potatoes very shallow in a bin and then when they grow, take off the bottom two leaves and put more dirt in - more potatoes will grow. He grew up in times when you had to grow what you ate, or hunt it. Made clothes out of the flour bags and such. |
