"China has won a seat on a panel on the controversial U.N. Human Rights Council, where it will help vet candidates for important posts -- despite its decades-long record of systematic human rights abuse that the U.S. has said fueled the coronavirus pandemic." [

I honestly don't think something could be more ironic right now.
Quoting: Lumberghini China has had a seat on the council several times since 2006, when it was formed to replace a similar council.
China has held these seats
in spite of its ongoing persecution of Tibetans since Chinese forces invaded and conquered the country in 1950,
in spite of its ongoing persecution of Falun Gong since 1999,
in spite of long standing proof of China's Communist Party's live harvesting of organs from Falun Gong,
in spite of the arrest and imprisonment of human rights lawyers, in one case around 100 in one swoop,
in spite of the denial of medicine to imprisoned dissidents, including Nobel Prize winner Liu Xiaobo,
in spite of holding around 1 million Uyghurs in re-education camps,
in spite of yearly proofs of torture used routinely in arrests,
for starters.
