Listen, I have a plan that worked for me. I am now retired in northern Idaho with a combined pension and social security income that, while not huge, is extremely adequate for the remainder of my days while living in this paradise of my choosing. Here is how I did it, and how you can, too.

I was age 50 (female) the first time I had the feeling I didn't want to go to work that day. And the next. Not because I didn't like my job but because I was tired. Projecting forward into the future, I realized that some day I would be 70, and that I had nothing saved, didn't own a house, and would be retiring on $800 Social Security if I was lucky. I had to take action.

My sister's husband had recently accepted a job with the State of California and was raving about the retirement pension plan. After about a year and a half of listening I finally moved out to California and lived with them while I went through the painful process of breaking into the civil service employment. You can do the same thing in North Carolina. I looked at the NC pension plan benefits booklet online just now, and their average retirement income check is around $1,400 a month, and if/when you get social security it would be on top of that. One of these days, you will either hit retirement age or be dead, so you may as well plan on living and have a pension, it's really quite glorious.

There is a website which lists all the NC state jobs, and you can search based on topics. I entered "construction" and found 41 openings that had that word in the job description. The idea is to take any job you can get, and then as time goes by, keep your eyes and ears open watching for promotions, better work conditions, less cranky supervisors, etc. Changing jobs within state service does NOT affect your pension in a negative way...most supervisors expect you to change every couple of years, and you are earning your years of service credit no matter what .gov you have.

The trick is to find a job that is not too awful and just hang on for awhile until you get the hang of the whole civil service thing, make friends in high and low places, and start hearing scuttlebutt about what and where are the best jobs and who is getting ready to promote out of positions or retire to empty up those positions. It's like a chess game.

If you find a job you really enjoy in a part of the state where you wouldn't mind settling down, by then you will have some $$ saved up and you can buy a property with a cabin which you will ultimately retire in. There are lots of cool places in the mountains, and it's not that big a deal to commute 30 minutes to work.

Once you have a steady work history with the state, and even just a 5% down payment saved up, you could get a mortgage. Find a place where you can cut some firewood, and have a garden and some chickens when you retire. By the time you are 60 you'll have a house with equity and that you've been working on improving the property for years. You'll still be young enough to enjoy your retirement years, and that retirement pension check shows up in your checking account on the first of every month. You could take odd jobs even after retirement to supplement your income but you will have your own set up and the safety of your own roof over your head.

It's not easy but it's a great plan A. Plan B is do nothing about your situation and look back in 20 years and say "Why didn't I listen to her??"

You're talking like there's been a biological attack and the airs poisoned. You stand a chance of catching the virus from other people that are infected. Being confined with 29 other persons that have not got the virus means you shouldn't get it.

So all's well and as it should be, i'd be more concerned if you did get it. I mean it's like me saying i'm sat in a roomful of virus free people and I can't understand why no ones dead yet....

I'm totally listening. Listening and doing are to different things. But yes I'm fine now, but the future might be coming and I do got to figure and actually do something about it

Actually told my sister to go to one. She had troubles and she damn sure wasn't gonna stay with me when she left me to starve back home. So I said if you go to a shelter and follow the rules they will help you, and even faster since she had kids.

That's because it's all about you. I know what goes on in homeless shelters and my family isn't being told to go to one. In the end all you have is family but you don't even have that.
