Anybody else have a frugality story or even a tip for the rest of us?

Are you saving the seeds from the tomatoes you buy to eat and planting them? (not sure what you would get, though, if it was a hybrid plant to begin with)

I figure I can use my spaghetti jars for soup later.

On a few occasions that I let a tomato from the vine just lie there at the end of the season, when they sprouted the next summer, they were cherry tomatoes.

I've never had creamed peas on toast, but creamed asparagus is really good, so is creamed chipped beef, and creamed boiled eggs on toast. You can get a lot of recipes on websites like allrecipes.com and epicurious.com

I have an old church cookbook from my little home town in Iowa, and it has a ton of recipes for casseroles - a great way to stretch the food dollar. People need to good casserole recipes. Most feed a large family for under $10.

This keeps disappearing from the thread, so I'll shorten it and try again. It's helpful, so someone might benefit from it.

Do you have cats? How much food do they leave in their bowls that you toss? Some days, mine eat it all. Other days, they'll leave half a bowl - same flavor - who knows why? A couple of months ago, I started freezing their leftovers - flavors all mixed up, the filet and bits type. I put them in the oven to warm them - served some warm - some were left to cook almost crispy. They ate both types like it was kitty candy.
A couple of weeks ago I started saving a big new batch of their leftovers. So glad because it took 4 days to get on the grocery delivery list. Had I not saved their leftovers, they'd have had nothing.

So, there's another idea for you. Pet food leftovers.

Stale chips and cereals - freshen and crisp them by putting them in the oven a few minutes.

Hey, is anyone else finding themselves being a lot more frugal and careful about food and other supplies these days?

I've been washing product containers and saving boxes and rubber bands thinking I might need them later. This morning, I was looking for something for breakfast and decided to eat stale Chex Cereal I had left over from making Christmas Chex Mix three months ago! I know I normally would have thrown it out, but now I think, well, it's vitamin fortified and at least edible - why toss it? Use it! Waste not, want not.
 Quoting: GA Girl

I'm doing the same. I'm optimistic about a change for the +, but always live on the conservative side in my usage of any product (day to day).

Except my investments, I still live on the risky approach. Hope I hit the low last Friday, when I reallocated at an my portfoli to even back out stokcs/Bonds at 60/40 . No question, there will be much market volatility until there is some resolution and clarity on where we're heading -- I think that we have good news late May, Then huge upward moves into late July/August/September.

This is a great idea. I cannot stand how much expensive cat food my picky ones waste. Usually the dogs snag the leftovers, but I am going to try this.

french fried pertaters
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76545842

LOL! I was looking at my onions and potatoes, thinking of ways to use them up once they start looking kind of rough. My first thought was fried onion petals. Then I recalled I don't have a ton of oil. Looks like oven-roasted potatoes with a bit of olive oil and some spices for the potatoes and sauteed or creamed onions.
 Quoting: GA Girl

Plant them. They will grow. I have some 5th generation red potatoes that are so sweet. Their ancestors originated from a bag I found that had got shoved back in the cupboard. They had sprouted and had these long pathetic looking sprouts coming out of them and they were all shriveled. I said what the heck and stuck them in a pile of dirt. They rewarded me with well over 10 pounds of delicious potatoes plus some little ones I planted next year. We are still going. When you cut the bottom off an onion. leave a little meat on it and plant it and see what happens. You can plant lettuce and cabbage bottoms and get greens. Start them in a little water.

I'm starting to get a clue as to why my father never threw out any nuts/bolts/screws, but saved them - just in case. When we cleaned out his garage we found jars and jars of these and wondered, why? I'm starting to get it now. LOL!
 Quoting: GA Girl

I am 57 years old and have more jars/cans/drawers full of nuts and bolts and screws than you can imagine. Some of them I have had since I was a teenager.

They are essential, if you are not into the 'throw it away and buy a new one' mindset.

If you need to fix something or build something, the hardware is already there. You don't have to go out and buy new Chinese crap. I don't know why people today don't understand this.

I got nervous weeks ago and pulled my stocks except about 15% which were in a closed fund that had performed well over the years, so I left some in there which will just have to ride it out. The bonds I have are gaining right now. Most everything is sitting in mm and waiting for the right time to get back in.

I bought this huge plastic jug some kind of cheese balls at Walmart 3 weeks ago as part of my junk food supply. They weren't great - the dog loved them, though. But, I finally finished them off. I went to throw out the container, but thought - there's got to be a use for this somewhere.

My cats are pigs - they would eat until they burst if I let them. If I don't feed them early enough in the morning (sometimes they think it's time to eat at 2 or 3 a.m.), they will throw themselves against my door or wall to wake me up! If I ignore it, my big cat will get up on the bed and jump on the poor dog (and that cat is a huge Tom weighing in at 15 lbs).

LOL! Yep, it is the hoarding mentality. If you dwell on the crisis, soon enough you will find things along the roadways, that you think you might be able to make something to survive later. Next thing you know your home is not only filled with used and washed package containers, but you also have garbage Galor and half a dozen chickens running loose in your back yard.

There is a silver lining, in about for or five years in a good economy. You will finally relax and clean out your mess. It might take meds, and therapy too. But after the hoarding episode you will be a stronger person.

Save large yoghurt containers. If you drill/cut holes into the bottom and the bottom edges for drainage, you can plant basil in them and grow them on a sunny windowsill.

I've never been a hoarder, but I had to laugh at your post. I've started saving the Beneful cat food containers thinking they would make great little dishes for rubber bands, paper clips, left-over screws and thing. They are just like miniature food containers you purchase at the store -why throw them? And I have given a couple of wistful thoughts to the idea of having chickens running around, but then I snap out of it as I don't want the local bears hanging around trying to get the chickens. LOL!

When feasible, re-using paper towels.
 Quoting: Wolf 1776

That's a thought - the paper towel used to wipe up a small spill could sit and dry out to wipe up another spill.

My mother used to re-use her coffee filters. I always wondered, why? You can buy a new box for a couple of bucks. But now, people might reuse them so you don't have to go to the store again to buy another box. It's definitely a different mindset. I have one of those gold filters, so I don't worry about it.
 Quoting: GA Girl

Always reuse my coffee filters. Some lessons from childhood just don't go away, I guess.

As for jars full of nuts, bolts and screws, my father has a bunch of those in his garage. You never know is what he always says. He was born in 42, so there wasn't a lot of money going on. They grew what they ate and even a piece of tin from patching the roof on the barn was saved as it might be just the piece they needed for another patch. Even glass jars of mayonnaise from the store became seed sprouters for apple trees and other things. Very inventive people.
Eireann~
