Hey, is anyone else finding themselves being a lot more frugal and careful about food and other supplies these days?

I've been washing product containers and saving boxes and rubber bands thinking I might need them later. This morning, I was looking for something for breakfast and decided to eat stale Chex Cereal I had left over from making Christmas Chex Mix three months ago! I know I normally would have thrown it out, but now I think, well, it's vitamin fortified and at least edible - why toss it? Use it! Waste not, want not.
 Quoting: GA Girl

Funny, I thought twice should I throw away the empty egg carton yesterday. Maybe, some locals that sell eggs could use them. We used to have to supply our own cartons when we got fresh eggs from someone. Yes, we are trying not to waste food and eat left overs we would have probably thrown out.

Re: Coronavirus Frugality
Absolutely!

For starters, I've been rationing calories for the past three weeks. Getting my body and mind used to functioning normally on between 1250-1500 calories per day. Supplementing with multivitamins, minerals, and holistic antivirals.

Did an inventory of my pantry, freezer, and fridge weeks ago and pulled all outdated items to the forefront. Those 'Best By' and 'Expired' dates are misleading. I've been eating fiber wheat wraps for days that are three months passed their date. Consuming protein powder five months passed its date. Lots of other examples. The take is: Inspect those food items and if their is no visible mold or foul odors, they should be okay to consume.

Made corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes for St. Patty's. Jarred all the broth. Is delicious when heated and sipped.

Have a casserole from leftover turkey in the freezer from Thanksgiving. Looking forward to eating that in a couple days.

Resourcefullness is paramount during these times.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68931187

Yes! My sister has been telling me this for years. They have a store near them which actually sells expired products, so they can pick up canned, jarred, and boxed items for pennies on the dollar. A little out of date, but normally still good for weeks, depending on the product. A lot of times you can smell when something has turned, such as nuts or chips. I haven't done that, but I have played with meat dates a bit. I have a chest freezer which is NOT self-defrosting. That defrosting cycle really cuts the time you have available to eat the products in the freezer. The chest freezer I have needs me to defrost every now and again, but it will keep beef fresh for a good three years (haven't tried beyond that age).

Re: Coronavirus Frugality
One tip I can give is to save any two-liter bottles, fill with water and put in the freezer. This ensures that you have some large blocks of ice to prevent your food from spoiling in case of a power outage.

You can make some disinfectant with bleach diluted with water. Put some old rags in that solution, to moisten. You can keep these rags in plastic bags in your car to replace a disposable wipe.

I am baffled as to why people are fighting over bottled water. Wash out your old containers and fill them from the tap. Think twice before you throw anything away. Many things can be reused in different ways.

We have had the luxury of living in a disposable society and maybe it is just time for all of us to change our thinking.

When feasible, re-using paper towels.
 Quoting: Wolf 1776

Take a box cutter and cut down the middle of the roll but not all the way through. Now you have doubled the amount of paper towels you have.

Use tea, kitchen and hand towels in the kitchen instead of paper towels. Only use ones that can be bleached in hot water.

Save glass jars to save left overs in like gravys.

Only a few drops of soft hand soap is needed to clean hands most of the time, not a full squirt.

Start growing veggies from veggies. The end of celery, onions and garlic will grow new ones. Your potatoes sprout from the "eye", cut them up with about an inch of potatoes and grow your own potatoes. The list goes on and on with this one.

Yep.

Started reusing glass jars instead of recycling them.

Eating everything that's already open before things that are still sealed.

However, I went too far with the old tangerines and nearly ended up drunk from them. Fruit does have a shelf life that should be respected.

I had an older bunch or bananas that I knew could possibly get too ripe. Sliced them and put them on a flat tray in the freezer. Once frozen I placed them in a freezer bag. Mainly use them for breakfast smoothies. I wouldn’t have done this a few weeks ago. It made me think of my grandparents who lived through the depression.
