Coronavirus Frugality
Hey, is anyone else finding themselves being a lot more frugal and careful about food and other supplies these days?

I've been washing product containers and saving boxes and rubber bands thinking I might need them later. This morning, I was looking for something for breakfast and decided to eat stale Chex Cereal I had left over from making Christmas Chex Mix three months ago! I know I normally would have thrown it out, but now I think, well, it's vitamin fortified and at least edible - why toss it? Use it! Waste not, want not.

Anybody else have a frugality story or even a tip for the rest of us?

Are you saving the seeds from the tomatoes you buy to eat and planting them? (not sure what you would get, though, if it was a hybrid plant to begin with)

I figure I can use my spaghetti jars for soup later.

Re: Coronavirus Frugality
I bought this huge plastic jug some kind of cheese balls at Walmart 3 weeks ago as part of my junk food supply. They weren't great - the dog loved them, though. But, I finally finished them off. I went to throw out the container, but thought - there's got to be a use for this somewhere.

I'm starting to get a clue as to why my father never threw out any nuts/bolts/screws, but saved them - just in case. When we cleaned out his garage we found jars and jars of these and wondered, why? I'm starting to get it now. LOL!

I've heard some people say they've been gaining weight because they have been so focused on food supply on one hand and not being able to exercise on the other.

That's a thought - the paper towel used to wipe up a small spill could sit and dry out to wipe up another spill.

My mother used to re-use her coffee filters. I always wondered, why? You can buy a new box for a couple of bucks. But now, people might reuse them so you don't have to go to the store again to buy another box. It's definitely a different mindset. I have one of those gold filters, so I don't worry about it.

LOL! I was looking at my onions and potatoes, thinking of ways to use them up once they start looking kind of rough. My first thought was fried onion petals. Then I recalled I don't have a ton of oil. Looks like oven-roasted potatoes with a bit of olive oil and some spices for the potatoes and sauteed or creamed onions.

Finding out you don't need 3 meals a day because your movement is limited is a fine money saver. I'm parked at GLP'ers house and got stuck here....Saves a heck of a lot money if you eat once a day because you are not burning calories.
If you are not busy weaving your own magick, you are trapped in anothers spell.

I've notice that, too. I've been eating two, though, breakfast and again about 3:00. I can't seem to get moving unless I have my coffee and at least a light breakfast.

Re: Coronavirus Frugality
I had an older bunch or bananas that I knew could possibly get too ripe. Sliced them and put them on a flat tray in the freezer. Once frozen I placed them in a freezer bag. Mainly use them for breakfast smoothies. I wouldn’t have done this a few weeks ago. It made me think of my grandparents who lived through the depression.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear."

Yes, over-ripe bananas make great banana bread. Carrots and zucchini make good bread, too.

We've been guilty many times of saving uneaten meals for leftovers and havin em sit in the fridge for days and then bein tossed out.

We've already trained ourselves that when we say what's for dinner...it's what we didn't eat last night that's what. We're also gettin better at not preparin more than we really need/want for a meal too.

Be safe AND stay healthy.

Having sailed a bit...scouse is a good option....and get a bidet toilet seat to save on TP....
Thread: TP? Really? You Can Get a Toilet Seat Bidet!

Look at the cost savings over a decade and the fact that you only need water and not the store.

i bought some kitchen towel that is blue weave and i've been washing and drying it and resusing it, not sure how long it will last but better than one time.

i've also been trying to save cans of food till much later and just eating odd things like half a jar of applesauce that won't last much longer with a handful of oats.

Me neither...hence scouse/chili/stew in a slow cooker is perfect. Eat when hungry and forget the timing...
