The design, worked out over centuries, is meant to put a person on the cusp. If the person forgives people for deliberately hurting them, then they are Christ. If they do not, then they are antichrist. The goal is to get away people who have done horrible things and been made rich by them, and not to elevate any individual soul, especially not the slave vessel who is 'chosen' for this. The one thing a person cannot do under any circumstances is quit. So you will see various twee characters whose lives are genuinely at risk should this fail begging the person not to give up, while those whose future is secure in any case act just as they have always felt entitled to act. Cui Bono? It's pretty obvious.
