NASA asteroid news: DART mission is ‘Earth's last line of defence’ [link to shr.gs]

NASA is readying to fire a spacecraft into an asteroid, testing Earth's last line of defence should a rogue space rock veer onto a catastrophic collision course with our planet.

The DART spacecraft will have a mass of 550kg, and will strike the Didymoon asteroid at 13,400 mph (21,565 km/h).

Smashing into an asteroid five times smaller with a spacecraft more than 200 times larger and moving three times faster should create sufficient impact energy to deflect the asteroid in the first such experiment for planetary defence.

I never said no one cares. I said it's just a stupid comet. And it is. I film stupid comets all the time. Newsflash, I'm an amateur astronomer, filming stupid comets is what I do. I also develop software to help film, track and analyze stupid comets.

Completely wrong. Even if it breaks up right this second, there will not be time or velocity enough for the fragments to spread out enough to reach earth. The tail will not intersect with earth, the comet is not passing between us and the sun.
