What makes me think this has been around for years, but the test wasn't used or needed before?

I have also pondered this. In such case it could have been mistaken for a regular flu before. It might have mutated since and we are seeing a lightly more deadly version this season. Who really knows at this point.

Same in the UK, they stopped today and are now only testing those in hospital and showing severe symptoms.

Since both UK and Sweden are doing exactly the same there must be valid reasons for this.

Maybe to try and quell panic in the population by showing lesser numbers and also steady the markets a little.

In addition, they want to free up health workers to concentrate on those getting really sick now.

So there are more nations realizing the futility in trying to monitor a spread that will be unmitigated anyway. Interesting theories. Probably for psychological reason then.

Yeah, maybe there is really no practical point trying combat the spread of the virus if it can't be stopped or contained anyway. Sooner or later everyone will have the infection in such case, unless there is a vaccine before it has run it's course.

Well...one can easily see how talk of "quarantine" and "containment" would lead to immediate logical breakdown
and obvious contradiction of Swedistani official policy.

In Italy, from the reports I've read every one that walks through the hospital door showing symptoms and gets tested is infected: bilateral interstitial pneumonia every time.

Might be that Sweden officials have read those same reports and others most likely.

Im no expert , but if you let it run rampant could that not possibly put more burden on the hospitals and therefor run the risk of more casualty's ?

Testing will only make a difference to hospital personel -(who need to be extra cautious). Every patient not hypoxic or moribund and needing admission should be advised to stay at home and self-isolate. A negative or positive test won't mean much for folks who don't need hospitalization--except insofar as to be doubly cautious about insuring no contact with others.

Society needs to be aware of how to protect themselves. Hospitals treat symptoms unless a diagnosis actually changes the treatment. This is the common sense given the fact that the rates of death is similar to the common flu.

This obviously from a race of people who rate among the smartest on the planet.

Supppsedly (can't confirm, no idea WHERE to look) but supposedly China had like 1.2 million extra recorded flu cases late november/december compared to previous years. Assuming true, what does that say about all the potential extra covid19 cases...and the fact they mostly recovered. If true it shits over the infection/death rate even more.

I would honestly believe for certain this has been making the rounds longer than people think, and a lot of those fearful of catching it...have likely already HAD it and gotten over it, believing it just the normal cold/flu.

The test is quite easy in fact - see someone hacking all over the place or looking generally unwell? Cross the street. Feel a little under the weather? Stay away from other people. Not sure? Do the common sense things.

Or wait around for you bullshit useless test in a box...

Yes, thank you. The tests only serve to create metrics that drive the panic, to produce a political outcome.
