Here's what I'll tell you. I worked for several years in a program under the President's Office at Harvard. And I worked in another area of Harvard and several years before that at MIT.

1% is 1 BILLION worldwide....

*Pretty much everyone will get infected - it's just very contagious and the period when it is communicable and yet there are no symptoms guarantees this

*20% of the population will require some hospitalization, for a longish period (several weeks). Right now hospitals are basically full. Imagine 20% of the country needing to access the hospital at almost the same time.

*The 20% who are seriously ill will need IV drips, oxygen tanks, and intravenous antibiotics against secondary infections, etc.

*5% of the population will need intensive care, ventilators, etc. We don't have anywhere near the facilities for this, anywhere.

Health care workers will also get sick, and they will be overwhelmed.

The stress on the population will be enormous - sick friends, family and co-workers, loss of income, uncertainty, confusion, fear about shortages as the supply chain slows down to a stop, etc.

Well, you do need to look at the facts. If you are over 50, if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart arrhythmia, or some other condition which might be relatively mild, you are still much more likely to succumb. That 3.6% figure (or whatever it is today) is spread across the population. If you are in the higher-risk group, your chances of dying are closer to 15%. So when you are an older American in a field such as nursing, airline attendant, bus driver, checkout clerk, teacher, or someone else who gets a lot of exposure to the public (especially children), you have very real and serious risks to factor in.
