Little Butane Stoves for yer Preps
Ok I admit I have wanted one of these and have seen the bank of choices available at the Asian Market. This woman has a short little youtube that explains how to load one, use it and even suggestions to save fuel.

Re: Little Butane Stoves for yer Preps
If anyone has some cooking suggestions please feel free to build on this thread. Lots of threads about food preps - but if you are gonna cook that stuff you have to have some options.

One note I saw in the comments was that Butane cans work much better when they are about 70 degrees or more. One comment said if you are in a very cold environment you'll need to warm up the can - (suggested inside their jacket) so that the fuel will spark up and burn well.

I also saw a stove on Amazon that will use butane or propane.
Happy cooking.

Even the little ones with the small bottles would let you cook well enough and hold you over in Hurricane areas where you lose power. The thing nice about the smaller ones is it gives those city dwellers an option that is not really going to need a lot of room.

Also these are nice for older folks or those that can't move big heavy stuffs around. You also have the option of picking up the small cans over time and building up a nice inventory. Those cans are so small and so easy to deal with even elderly can something like this.

As a prepper, why would you want this? Fire works just fine. I don't need additional 'things' to carry around.

Preppers need minimal items. Easy to pack up, move around and get away.

You know you really are not thinking of the wide variety of preppers here and what they are prepping for. This little stove weighs only a few pounds. Most of them come in a carrying case. If I lose power down here in Florida due to storms I am not going to be building a fire out in the yard to make coffee or cook rice. Also even BBQs can be a pain to deal with for, like I said above the boiling water frying egg thing. Not to mention as she points out in the video a small stove can be a little more stealth.

Shelter in place is a thing.

If you wanna go full on out inawoods and build yer smoke signal fire go on ahead.

I'm not a hardcore prepper. I have reserves like 2-3 months of food, seeds, a garden, heavy artillery, etc.

But I love my little Coleman propane stove. It's easy to clean, works well, is fairly cheap, I can take it some fishing trips etc. In fact, I may try to sneak it on the next 18 hour headboat trip.

Because, if you are in emergency and need quickly to make just a pot of tea or instant coffee, from the moment you desire it and you can have it ready, it's just in a matter of minutes... not so easily with a fire, which you need to start, to develop it, etc. And mostly is that you want to do it w/o leave a large trace in heat thermal vision domain nor making huge setups that could take long time and could expose you if you are on the run or something. This is said that 90% of population will disappear in the first few weeks after a SHTF scenario, because of lemmings like you!

This too.
The little stoves with the small cans are just one of many options. You can build a rocket stove out in the yard too.
There are many ways to go -
But this little stove - and a few butane bottles you can slide under the bed or store on a shelf in the closet. You can use it on the kitchen counter. On a picnic table at a rest stop.

Its tiny tiny like some of those personal rocket stove options, its a more "standard" option - its a good Christmas gift for gramma. So she can have a hot meal when the power is out for a while due to a storm. Or for the apartment dweller if they shut off power during a Virus lock down.

This is my last post defending the concept.
The video is a good representation of how to use these little stoves IF ITS THE RIGHT OPTION FOR YOU.

LOL, excellent -
Also some older ladies cannot handle a big propane tank. Those little cans of butane can be picked up over time at a few dollars each. Of course we are all afraid of Asian folks right now due to the virus but an excellent, low cost place to look at a variety of these stoves and get cheap butane are the Asian Markets.

For Floridians near the Orlando area, 50 in Winter Park has a slew of very large Asian food and goods markets. I think you can manage a pretty good emergency back up set up of stove and fuel for $30 bucks or less.

Re: Little Butane Stoves for yer Preps
I've got an"old"(green) coleman folding "white gas" stove, Had it for decades; it always fires up.
and a couple of gallons of sealed "coleman fuel" set a side for emergencies. I believe it'll run on unleaded gasoline in an emergency.

You can create alcohol stove out of popcans. Or just put it in an empty tuna can and light it. fuel them with "denatured alcohol"(available in sealed metal pints and quart cans from the paint area of most stores.

I think the two of you have different ideas of prepping. Yours is short term his is very long term.

How much fuel are you going to store? 3 months, 6months, years or is this for the real and much more common SHTF that lasts for a couple of weeks or days?

FYI: Long term you'll be inawoods and build yer smoke signal fire.

Re: Little Butane Stoves for yer Preps
Actually those butane stoves are a great prep item.....Why?

- they're cheap to buy and operate....I found them for $19.00 and the butane canisters 4 for $5...cheaper than propane cylinders...

- they are easy to operate for non hiker/prepper people.....I have many expensive hiking/camping stoves but they are harder to operate and assemble....these stover are similar to a kitchen range or hot plate that most will recognize....

-fuel continuity.....they also sell a lantern that uses these butane cylinders....easy stocking of fuel....

Even in non emergency times, I find them handy during backyard cooking.....

Yeh that ain't lasting. You need big bottles for long term. They'll get stolen outside and take up too much room inside.

So now we're prepping for luxury? Coffee, tea, hot showers whenever and whatever I desire? Come on man! That sounds like glamping.

I'm prepping to SURVIVE!

I will eat cold beans before I buy this! Second, I will kill a rabbit or other critter and build a fire.

That's what I did!

I ate cold beans, then i got one of these dandy butane stoves.
No moar cold beans for me.

Also, I can hardily UN-recommend chewing raw coffee as a source of caffeine.

Rabbit tartar is ok though, if you don't mind the parasites.

There's more to survival than cold beans out of a can, for pity's sake. I camped with Lakota native Americans, the ultimate survivors, and they are very organized about their food. Coffee pot goes on the Coleman stove before dawn, and the beautiful smell wakes you up. First light the bacon hits the skillet, then pancakes. So they make a point of enjoying their lives at camp, not just surviving.

They can also just as easily go days without eating anything at all and never mention it. If you try to feed them or sympathize with them, "I'm fine."

They also never mentioned "how hot" or "how freezing cold" it was, weather was completely irrelevant to them. Stoicism seems built into their DNA. Amazing people and culture.
