She said her mom gave them Baking Soda to drink every morning.

Ive heard this many times about the Spanish Flu, that people treated it with Baking Soda.

Exactly. Everyone who has had the blessing of having a grandparent (or great grandparent) can appreciate their absence of ego, wisdom gained from long life, and love and empathy for all experiencing life. Their advice is from the heart.

Thank you for sharing this hf

So children take half a teaspoon of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) every morning before breakfast (in some water) and presumably adults take a teaspoon. She says she thinks that's what saved them.

I'm sure it had A LOT to do with the baking soda. I've been told to drink it when I feel like I might be getting sick. Keeps the body alkaline...in which viruses do not thrive. I've also been told to drink it before bed. Probably not a bad idea....considering. On a siide note you can use any kind of baking soda...but I like to get Bobb's Redmill which has no aluminum in it.

Great video indeed

Put two and two together... and raising a curious question - what was the salt intake like for the sick population back in those days?

Mixing baking soda, or NaHCO3, with hydrochloric acid (the predominant acid in your stomach), or HCl, results in table salt, NaCl Sodium Chloride, as well as water, H2O, and carbon dioxide, CO2. It might bloat you quite badly if you take too much or have a full stomach.

I noted that she took a little before breakfast, it probably made her eat less for breakfast, but also provided a dose of electrolyte.

I use to get the flu all the time, and would last weeks, but then I finally cottoned on to how effective just a hearty and salty chicken soup was!

By the way, I have frequented this forum since the late 90’s I think.
