Preppers in every state east of the Rockies -- what to do about storms when TSHTF?
Currently I live with my wife and 3 girls in Florida. As long as we get live weather updates, we know when to bunker down for a hurricane or tornado. But what do we do when the lights go out when there's nobody running the NOAA or SPC at the government office? How will we know when a storm is coming?

What about you preppers in Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Kansas, Kentucky? How do you know when a tornado is coming without the NOAA warning you? Are you worried?

My family has a bugout (really a vacation home) in Idaho. I know realistically in an actual SHTF situation we'll never make it out there in time so we're looking to buy a property in Kentucky. But my wife is worried about storms.

Any suggestions to calm her?

Not much you can do except get to the center of the home.. assuming it is a house and not a tiny/mobile home.

Otherwise, invest in a true storm shelter. You can use it as storage all year round.

You have to just feel the weather. Pay attention to it. There are palpable things before tornadoes unless you're in the midst of a serious thunderstorm as well.

Hail usually precedes tornadic activity. Putting your ear to a window pane and hearing what sounds like a train is a good indicator a tornado is near. Dogs are fantastic prognosticators.

For hurricanes, it's really evident in the sky that they are coming.

We live in tornado alley. Lived in a mobile with no shelter for several years, and that got pretty twitchy 3 times.

It's really not that difficult. Tbh, wild fires in a shtf scenario worry me more. But thieves and murderers concern me more than wild fires.

Do what you feel really led to do. You have to get quiet and calm to know what that is.

Interesting. Unfortunately neither I nor my wife have such a built in barometer. We have a digital weather station but by the time it indicates a storm is approaching, it's already too late.

Wow! I couldn't imagine living in a mobile home in tornado alley with no place to go! Ok but the main thing is you survived! What kind of winds did you experience?

As far as thieves, murderers, we're looking for a place with good neighbors. Plus both my wife and I took tactical training with live ammunition. It was intense. My wife is as good as me when it comes to long range sniper and even my girls can use a gun if need be. I think community is important in defending your family!

Many amateur radio operators are trained weather observers and can be heard on your local 2m and 70cm repeaters when severe weather moves through.

You can also build your own WEFAX station and pull down the latest weather pictures when the satellite passes overhead. Even if society goes to pot the sats should keep working for a while.

And trust your own instincts, hurricanes don't just show up, you can get a general sense just by going outside.

We live in Oklahoma, have all of our lives, and while we love to see the live radar (as it shows to the pinpoint what street or streets the tornado(s) are located) we can just instinctively feel when the weather is going to spawn tornados. We did not have a shelter during the May 3rd 1999 F5 tornado, but hopped in the car and drove the opposite direction, which we have done many times. We now have a tornado shelter, located outside our home not in the garage. We would highly recommend getting a tornado shelter as it has really given peace of mind when the weather gets rough. So glad you survived Maiya! That is incredible!

Quite often they're rain-wrapped. If one is approaching you, you'll hear the often-described sound of a train approaching. Depending on location, your winds will suddenly become eerily calm. That calm is the ultimate sign something is headed your way. GTF to safety at that point.

Yes, have a digital weather station. It's ok for barometric pressure but it's weather forecast is wrong. All the time.

My friend is trying to get us to buy a vacant lot down the block from them near Maysville. It seems like a good location. Again, this would be a bugout location rather than a permanent residence.

No matter what happens, you want water, light and ability to cook.

If a hurricane is coming, clean and fill the bathtub before water services are wiped out, even you don't take hit. Your municipal services may not be working, and last for awhile. First aid kit.

Make a food cache of beans, rice, etc., to cook, wrap it up, and put it in the attic or a high, dry space. Make a dry cache of socks and clothing and have it up high.

Cooking could be grill, propane or charcoal, but again, charcoal would have to be kept dry; cinder block rocket stove, Sun Oven.

Just had an EF2 in NC a few days ago. Emergency weather radio would have warned me but I wasn't home. I just knew I had to get out earlier that morning. Instinct. A few of my neighbors said the same thing.

Florida is flat. In Kentucky find a place between the hills, not in a valley. SC doesn't have many tornados. Greenville area is nice.

Sorry, but living in one of the most disaster prone states(Florida) is a bad idea to begin with.

Why state in a state that has very little land above sea level by much. That gets hit by hurricanes, fires, tornadoes, and where the soil is so bad you can not grow very much?

Seriously. I never understood giving out freedom to move to anywhere, why would anyone choose Florida?

My parents used to have an old analog barometer. It was very accurate to let you know a storm was approaching within 24 hours...

Also, look at the clouds. Cirrus clouds indicate possible bad weather within 24 hours...

Then there is the old saying, "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailor's take warning."

So using the above methods you can predict bad weather. As of how severe, you have to look at the clouds; sky color; and wind shift...

The idea is to be prepared for bad weather coming in within 24 hours. Know your staging area and prep it...

I'm in Oklahoma and yes we get tornado's...

Thank you. Yeah that's common sense and living in Florida we know about wild weather. Unfortunately the weather here does not give you 24 hours heads up! It could be a high pressure sunny morning then by 12 noon a super low pressure 930 system moves in. And I'm outside on a boat! That's happened before.

I'm asking about the south east really as you guys seem to face a severe storm every week! WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?
