I'll start.

Cell tower sites all have large tanks of diesel fuel for their backup generators, same with hospitals, grocery stores, schools, etc.

I know this is a fact because my step-father is a diesel generator service tech. Makes sense but many don't know this.

Feel free to share any important resources you know about below!

Yes, for certain folk this is almost going to be better than the world we live in right now if we survive the pandemic.

You have 30-40 gallons of drinkable water in your water heater.

But if they turn off the water because it's contaminated...then you can't trust it.

Quick guide on making adobe brick.

This is more of a rebuilding technique, but could come in handy in case city living is no longer possible and you need a permanent structure.

Dig a hole about 4' x 4' x 3'. Fill with water, let drain. Fill again with water and dirt that is a mix of roughly 25% clay and 75% soil. Mix until you have a thick mud, and mix in some straw, grass, leaves, etc as they help hold the structure.

Shovel into equally-sized rectangular molds and let set. Once set, remove the mold and let them sit in sunlight to dry - this can take a few weeks. If they start to crack, cover them so they aren't getting as much direct sunlight. If you can drop one from about 4 feet and it breaks, you need more clay in your mixture.

Once you have enough bricks, you can use them like normal bricks to build structures. The same mud can be used as mortar and plastering, though if you can filter out the larger particles, that would be ideal.

It's the cheapest possible method for building a structure than can withstand not just temperature and weather shifts, but also fire, flood (to an extent), and even bullets. Been in use for thousands of years.

Don't forget radiator heat in homes.

You would have almost that same amount in the pipes or more, depending on the home/system.

You'd have to cut them or bleed it off from the basement level and purify it, but it's there.

I am a electrician at a college we have like 10 generator's with less than 1/8 tank of fuel. As it goes bad. But they do have a lot of solar panels

Great idea for a thread! I don’t have any secret info other than you can eat most “weeds” and grow poppies for pain meds from the seeds on your spice rack.

--------------------

I've heard if you add sand to the mix it makes great bricks for a fireplace/chimney...but I have no idea what the ratio of sand would be.

Good info, I'll ask my stepdad about that then.

I know that the hospitals, stores, and cell sites don't fuck around... they are up to spec and ready to go because of the necessity.

They literally scrap perfectly fine 250kw gennies all the time to upgrade.

In fact, in some cases you can get your hands on them and resell them for a good profit if you can convince them to let you arrange rigging and shipping which he's done a few times.

They really just want them out of there as quickly as possible for the replacement.

Thank you - forgot to mention that and one other thing.

This is NOT an ideal structure in earthquake zones. It can withstand a lot but quakes can knock them down.

Indoor Debris Shelter.

Last winter when the temp reached 30 degrees below zero, I began wondering how I would stay warm if the power went out.

I came up with the INDOOR DEBRIS SHELTER.

Start by pushing 2 couches together...if you don't have 2 couches you could place chairs against one side of the couch, or place chairs around your bed on both sides...if you don't have enough chairs, push your bed against a wall and place chairs on the other side of the bed.

Next start throwing everything that can keep you warm onto the bed or couches (cloths, jackets, pillows, couch cussions, blankets) pile it all up, the chairs or backs of the couches will hold it all together in a pile. Cover the whole pile with a blanket, tarp, plastic sheet, or shower curtain (it will act as a roof to help hold the heat in).

Worm your way into the bottom of the pile & that should be enough to keep you warm. Keep in mind you need an opening for your head so you can breathe.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Use the bath tub as a heat source.

If you have a gas water heater, it should still work when the electricity goes out.

You could make up a bed in the bathroom and shut the door (to keep the heat trapped in the bathroom.

Run the faucet in the tub until the water is coming out hot and then put the stopper in the drain & fill the tub with hot water only.

Don't get in the tub...you are only using it as a heat source to keep the bathroom warm.

When the water cools, let the water drain & fill the tub with hot water again...as long as the bathroom door is closed, the heat will be held in the bathroom & you should stay warm...but you will get damp from the steam...so have a change of cloths ready and waiting for you OUTSIDE OF THE BATHROOM! When you leave the bathroom it will be cold and you will be damp from the steam...you will want a set of dry cloths right there to change into IMMEDIATELY! A towel wouldn't hurt either.
If I am going to be damned...I am going to be damned for who I really am!
