Re: I'm a microbiologist, (bacteriology) ask me whatever you want.
Question I asked in another thread, but no one had an answer. Maybe someone here has a thought?

"What about the antivirals like Zovirax? I was given that a few years ago when I caught chicken pox (don't ask, please redface), the case was very light, and gone in 4 days.

Does this work on any virus, or just certain ones?"
 Quoting: Lady Jayne Smith

My son just reminded me of the prescription I have for the same! I did one course with predisolone, and it didn't help, so they gave me another course. THEN, it was discovered I had freaking SCABIES, caught from my mother in the hospital.. I still tell people I know it was chickenpox. rofl..

We were wondering that also.. I am not sure, but I've read this corona virus has an envelope that is tougher? I swear I need to organize my links, lol..

If it mutates in a good way, maybe treatments will be found to work?

*edited*

My prescription is for acyclovir

For whatever this is worth:

My neighbor is an internationally renown epidemiologist (no! I will NOT give his name), he has rarely been home for several days, and is too distracted to even wave when driving to his house. He's usually quite friendly, and has that funny-as-hell, sarcastic professor sense of humor.

 Quoting: Lady Jayne Smith

Is he wearing a space suit around the hood?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77517484

No, but he is not putting the top down on his Beamer. Does that count?
 Quoting: Lady Jayne Smith

First of all, just to be a total douche, a BMW car is called a "Bimmer" not a beamer, that's the motorcycle. I know this because I read it somewhere and now I'm stuck with that douchey knowledge in my head.

Now, does it count? Hard to say, but it might, depends on what Doc neighbor thinks. Does kinda sound like he's got more serious than normal though, top up with jibe with that.

Whatever ..... I'm a Mercedes snob.

Top up comment was tongue in cheek. Yes, I would imagine he has far more important things on his mind than enjoying his convertible.

For those not familiar with NIOSH's rating of HEPA filters and Respirators>

95 means 95.97% efficient down to 0.3 microns
100 means 99.97% efficient down to 0.3 microns

The letters N,R, and P before these numbers indicates oil mist resistance: Not resistant, Resistant, and Proof.

These HEPA filters are meant to protect workers in an Industrial setting against certains Dusts, Particles and some Mists.

Of course to reach this efficiency the worker needs to be fit tested and trained in the proper use of these respirators as they are tight fitting, negative pressure. Not wearing them properly provides no protection.

could a coronavirus that causes the common cold be engineered to trick the immune system into identifying nCoV and killing it off?

We could engineer a light form and spread it before this one takes hold making the world immune to the more virulent form.

Probably a larp because non of the information we have seen suggests otherwise, we are not seeing anything related to people hemmoraging in the lungs or anything, but what i gleamed from what tangy posted is that the virus is a novel corona virus thats come from bats. Tangy posted the genome in the thread.

So hypothetically speaking, if this is a bioweapon (i dont think it is ) its been designed from the ground up, to look like a brand new virus and doesnt show gene activity relating to anything known to be human, it appears to be a bat corona virus thats made a jump to humans.

We also dont have any good info yet on how deadly it is, and the r0 numbers are implied to be around 3.5 which is significantly infectious even if it isnt anymore deadly than bad seasonal flu.

Then this startup company mentioned in this article.. Working on a faster way to diagnose.

[link to www.statnews.com (secure)]

The genome sequences have more to give. They “will be crucially important for development of diagnostics [and] vaccines,” said biologist Richard Ebright of Rutgers University.

For instance, the genome-editing technology CRISPR is the basis for Cambridge, Mass.-based startup Sherlock Biosciences’ diagnostics, which promise to slash how long it takes to make a definitive identification. In the U.S, that’s now done only by sending samples to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which uses a technology invented in the 1980s, polymerase chain reaction or PCR, to identify the presence of coronavirus.

“Our vision is that our [CRISPR-based] SHERLOCK and INSPECTR platforms are tailor-made for outbreaks like coronavirus,” said Sherlock CEO Rahul Dhanda, who declined to discuss “specific plans related to coronavirus.”

IMO yes, now they have the genome yes, the problem is mutations that affect the surface antigens that our immune system keys too, they could hypothetically isolate the genes that are responsible for the outer protein structure of the viron and use those genes to make a genetically modified harmless strain and use those antigens to create an immune responce. It might mutate too quickly that this becomes fruitless though. Hypothetically. I might be way off on this an immunologist and virologist and biochemist would help here.

In influenza strains the N H prefixes (ie h1n1) you see are generally identifying the types of hemagluttanin (sugar protein) that causes blood cell clotting and neuraminidase (enzyme that breaks sugar bonds in molecules) on the surface of those particular flu strains.

The real question is how is the immune reaction to the orginal virus and would that be benefitial, it appears to be novel, so the rumours about it caused cytokine storms might have validity.

They might honestly be better just using cultured inert viruses or antibody transfer, the problem is i dont know if they can culture this virus well yet, and antibodiy farming is time sensitive.
