If "Coronavirus" refers to a general category of viruses that can also cause basic cold-like symptoms, including those of the common cold, shouldn't the label of what originated in Wuhan be changed to something like "Wuhan virus"?

.
 Quoting: CSnow

Yes. And it will have an official name at some point. The techical temporary name is 2019nCoV but the newspapers will never get it right. It will get a catchy name soon, I'm sure, just like MERS and SARS.

My suggestion is WURS for Wuhan Respiratory Syndrome or WARS Wuhan Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Price controls on masks and disinfecting materials being implemented.

Won't work, but, hey, gotta appear like you are doing something to help.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

It will also guarantee they will run out of PPE. If they allowed “gouging,” some would be willing to take the risk for a big windfall. Thomas Sowell wrote a great piece about it years ago with regard to hurricanes and how, if the market was allowed to take over, Florida would not run out of gas and generators every time there’s an emergency.

Since the virus started in central China and there’s a two-week incubation period, it stands to reason that the only cases would be Chinese currently. If, as you said, in another 8-10 days, all the cases are still ethnically Chinese, we could start to be suspicious that it discriminates, but I very much doubt that will be the case.
 Quoting: Deplorable Revbo™

First case in Thailand was a british tourist. So it gets white people too .

Where did that train of thought even begin (that the virus only targets Chinese)? I agree with you, another week and we'll know for sure, but it doesn't seem likely that it would target only one ethnic group. That statement keeps popping up all over GLP but no one ever posts anything to support it other than "only Chinese people have died". To me, that's like saying that because there was a car crash in China, only Chinese people crash cars. Bad logic. Fact is, right now, we don't have enough information to make any kind of real assessment of the situation.

Similarly, the situation in Wuhan has made me aware of just how unsanitary or unhygienic people and places are in China.

I recall talking to someone who visited China about 10 years ago and he said the number of people spitting in public in cities like Shanghai was disgusting. He also mentioned how the first thing he noticed when landing at an airport in India was the bad smell.

Then people wonder why I'm so pissed that there are people - based right her in the US - resentful of Donald Trump and the concept of MAGA?

Way too early to tell if this virus prefers a certain genotype. I would expect 100% of the cases in the US to be imported. One shouldn't assume that the suspect cases in the US are all Chinese. We just don't know yet.

Give it another week.

But, coronaviruses aren't generally picky.

Great article. Have you seen the video showing ppl collapsing on the street? & just randomly collapsed in the middle of public places? Looked like something from the Spanish flu. Many of them were definitely from this virus (surrounded by chinese hazmat ppl), don't doubt the others were too. With only about 41 dead there at the time there must be footage of half of the corpses in the clip I saw...unless China is lying...

More cases are likely to be identified in the coming days, including more cases in the United States. Given what has occurred previously with MERS and SARS, it’s likely that person-to-person spread will continue to occur. It would not be surprising if person-to-person spread in the United States were to occur. Cases in healthcare settings, like hospitals, may also occur.

That's fine, but purely speculation. It makes some huge assumptions without any reasoning other than "it could be this way". I'm just curious why it's taken such hold. Is there a piece of information I've missed that drives this conclusion? If so, please share it with me.

I'm not saying you are wrong, as you very well might be right. Guess we'll know pretty quickly one way or another.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75458309

I'm just saying it's possible since it happened before, but in this case, it's too early to even guess.

Do we even know the ethnicity of the American cases? Even if they're all Asian, that's not enough to hazard a guess yet because they need time to infect other people. And the first people Asians would presumably be able to affect are likely to be a Asian family members and friends, so even then we might need more time for additional exposure to non-Asians.
 Quoting: gnostic9

And I wonder if the type of blood factor matters. In Asia, blood type B is the bigger type. Which is crap,,because that is what I have, type B+. Damn! I hope not.

Keep that in mind. It attacks because of some common denominators.

Here’s the most recent update

The available sequences suggest a likely single, recent emergence from a virus related to bat coronaviruses and the SARS coronavirus. The available sequence information does not provide any information about severity of associated illness or transmissibility of the virus.

Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, and there is evidence that person-to-person spread is occurring. At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people. Learn what is known about the spread of newly emerged coronaviruses.
