Quoting: CSnow If "Coronavirus" refers to a general category of viruses that can also cause basic cold-like symptoms, including those of the common cold, shouldn't the label of what originated in Wuhan be changed to something like "Wuhan virus"? . Yes. And it will have an official name at some point. The techical temporary name is 2019nCoV but the newspapers will never get it right. It will get a catchy name soon, I'm sure, just like MERS and SARS. My suggestion is WURS for Wuhan Respiratory Syndrome or WARS Wuhan Acute Respiratory Syndrome. WORS is good too. Quoting: Deplorable Revbo™ Since the virus started in central China and there’s a two-week incubation period, it stands to reason that the only cases would be Chinese currently. If, as you said, in another 8-10 days, all the cases are still ethnically Chinese, we could start to be suspicious that it discriminates, but I very much doubt that will be the case. First case in Thailand was a british tourist. So it gets white people too . There ya go. I think the Brit tested neg. I am not going back to look for the link Gotcha. So, it’s still all Chinese. Again, not surprising considering it started in China. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |

Quoting: gnostic9 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome A Coronavirus that primarily infected Middle Eastern people. Why couldn't one also be selective about Asians? Where did that train of thought even begin (that the virus only targets Chinese)? I agree with you, another week and we'll know for sure, but it doesn't seem likely that it would target only one ethnic group. That statement keeps popping up all over GLP but no one ever posts anything to support it other than "only Chinese people have died". To me, that's like saying that because there was a car crash in China, only Chinese people crash cars. Bad logic. Fact is, right now, we don't have enough information to make any kind of real assessment of the situation. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75458309 With MERS, it was not selectivity of the virus for ME people, it was (and remains) a matter of common practices related to ME people's religion (the common fountains outside mosques used for their wudu (they wash out their noses in the water before entering the mosque because they believe the devil goes into the nasal passages at night). Is there a piece of information I've missed that drives this conclusion? If so, please share it with me. I'm not saying you are wrong, as you very well might be right. Guess we'll know pretty quickly one way or another. I'm just saying it's possible since it happened before, but in this case, it's too early to even guess. Do we even know the ethnicity of the American cases? Even if they're all Asian, that's not enough to hazard a guess yet because they need time to infect other people. And the first people Asians would presumably be able to affect are likely to be a Asian family members and friends, so even then we might need more time for additional exposure to non-Asians. And I wonder if the type of blood factor matters. In Asia, blood type B is the bigger type. Which is crap,,because that is what I have, type B+. Damn! I hope not. Keep that in mind. The available sequence information does not provide any information about severity of associated illness or transmissibility of the virus. Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, and there is evidence that person-to-person spread is occurring.
