Thank you Petpeeve for being the watchdog in these matters, pun intended. I remember that. If I recall, it was caused by massive overdose of Vitamin D, likely China supplied, added to the dry food products of several brands made at the same pet food mill. User ID: 77752291 United States 12/06/2019 06:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wow... yeah, good catch, thanks much for the heads-up. I've got three cats, two dogs and, stereotypes be damned, I'm very much a "cat guy" (dogs actually belong to gf). In all the ways that matter (to me) the lives of my cats hold more value than that of the average human. Seriously don't know how I'd react if one of them was killed by defective catfood. Pretty sure it would involve massive property damage with some (unfortunate, naturally) loss of life. I guess the take-away here is fuck with my cats at your own peril. Thanks again for the info. As you can see you may very well have saved human lives as well so yeah, there's that for the Christmas spirit! ChayOphan |

They will eat nothing else now, but I guess it's safer but more expensive. The strays are not picky. Kitteh User ID: 4049272 United States 12/06/2019 06:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks ! as a way to keep the thread going and in the top, would like to know what everyone feeds their Kittehs ? btw, my little buddy got a patch of catnip planted for him outdoors next to my garden, but he still prefers the celery planted in the veggie garden. Found out that celery is milder than catnip. Cats either love it or walk away. Next time you buy celery, show them them leaves and let them take a whiff and you'll know if they like it or not. Good to get the greens in them too ! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 65258342 United States 12/06/2019 06:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | no the world is a better place with them.... Cats are my favorite animal... as a pet anyway. I haven't fed trash food to mine for a long long time now. I do not use the cheap house brands... because the vet bills are far more than quality food. |

As you can see you may very well have saved human lives as well so yeah, there's that for the Christmas spirit! I made the mistake of feeding Starkist tuna to my cats as a treat. Big mistake. They will eat nothing else now, but I guess it's safer but more expensive. The strays are not picky. Too much Tuna can also be harmful from the Taurine. As everyone knows, cat food prices keep going UP with a 5.5oz. can going for around fifty cents! To combat this, several years ago I began buying 10lb. bags of Chicken Hindquarters when they went onsale [as they regularly do] for as little as .49/lb. just to use as Cat food... and I could also fry up a few drumsticks for myself! $5-6 of Chicken is ALOT of meat and they'll even crunch away on the bones for the Calcium with no problem. Most cats LOVE Chicken whether raw, boiled, roasted or fried and at least this way I know they AREN'T getting any of those mysterious "by-products" that every can label lists... plus, IT'S CHEAPER! BTW: I boil the Chicken in salted water since most cat food has a salty taste... and DON'T ask me how I know this! A PLUS is that the cooking liquid makes excellent stock for soups/stews for my own table! I also haunt the discounted meat case at my local grocery. Expired cuts I won't eat can be frozen and fed raw/cooked and won't hurt my animals one bit. Just two days ago I found one-pound packs of Oscar Meyer Roasted White Turkey deli slices; they expired that same day and were reduced in price from $3.99 down to only a QUARTER [.25 cents each!] - needless to say, I bought 8 pounds of excellent cat food for only $2.00! Of course, I don't feed my animals this kind of thing exclusively as a regular diet. I buy nutritionally balanced dry foods in name brands [NEVER house brands like "Special Kitty" since there's a GOOD reason they are cheaper!] that provide everything they require to stay healthy. Try the Chicken hindquarters the next time you see them onsale! You'll save LOTS of money and your furry little friends will love you even more for it and, as I said... YOU can enjoy it for dinner, too! Last Edited by GSB/LTD on 12/06/2019 07:39 PM |

Found out that celery is milder than catnip. Cats either love it or walk away. Next time you buy celery, show them them leaves and let them take a whiff and you'll know if they like it or not. Good to get the greens in them too ! I grow Oat sprouts for mine to devour as "Kitty grass". The seeds I buy at a Feed/Seed store for about .85/lb [that's ALOT of Oat seeds!]. They sprout in 3-5 days and look like a miniature lawn when planted in a cookie sheet lined with a thin layer of soil. They don't even require much light - just keep the soil moist. Greens such as this are essential for the Folic Acid they contain and the roughage also acts as a disgestive aid. The trouble comes when one of them decides to roll around in their lawn and crush the sprouts flat... but, another day or so out of their reach and the tray is ready for another buffet! BTW: I have also tried growing Alfalfa and Sweet Clover sprouts but Oats seem to be their favorite. But ALL those seeds are dirt-cheap when bought at a feed/seed store where they are sold from bulk bins. The exact same seeds are repackaged and sold in much smaller quantities as "Kitty Grass" at a HUGE markup! Likewise I buy Organic Catnip from a wholesaler by the pound and save a bundle. I've tried growing, it, but they always nibble the plants down to nothing in NO time! Last Edited by GSB/LTD on 12/06/2019 07:42 PM |
