These and other examples demonstrate the subtle and exacting balance of forces that is established in a gravitational system composed of many bodies.). The porosity of materials with respect to water. Within this parameter exists the balance necessary for healthy life. Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers usually refer to “perc” (shorthand for percolation) tests for residence based waste disposal systems. If water percolates to fast through the soil, subterraneous aquifers used for drinking water may become contaminated with bacteria and waste products. If percolation is too slow, wastewaters may stagnate creating unhealthy, disease prone areas. Water, its purity, its uses, its necessity for life is much referred to in scripture: WATER (Hebrew: mayim, Greek: hydor). Considering its dearth in the Holy Land, water is much prized there. Truancy of water was very serious (1 Kings 17:1ff.; Jeremiah 14:3; Joel 1:20), and rain was a sign of God's favor. The rivers of the Holy Land are mostly meager and have little if any water in the summer season. Consequently, in Bible times, the country relied on rainfall as its source of water. Cisterns were a necessity for the repository of water, but if water was stored too long it became brackish and filthy and a menace to proper hygiene. In the summer there was no rain, so the flora and fauna was dependent on the heavy dews. Irrigation was exercised where there was adequate water. When water was scarce, as during a time of siege, it had to be rationed. Drinking water, carried in goatskins, was often sold in the streets. Wells and pools were comparatively scarce (Genesis 21:19, 24:11; John 4:6, 9:7). Water was employed for ceremonial washings before meals and in the Temple ceremony (Leviticus 11:32, 16:4; Numbers 19:7). In the Bible water is used it as a symbol of the cleansing of the soul from sin (Ezekiel 16:4, 16:9, 36:25; John 3:5; Ephesians 5:26; Hebrews 10:22; 1 John 5:6, 5:8). ** The Average Distance between stars. The magnitude of this parameter for a given substance is involved with peripheral vision such as the “fish-eye” effect in camera lenses. The Speed of Light varies in passing through from material to material. Light travels fastest in a perfect vacuum, where its speed is c = 2.998 * 10^8 m/sec. Its speed in air is c/1.0003. In water its speed is c/1.33, and in ordinary glass it is about c/1.5. The Index of Refraction is classically designated (n or ): The absolute index of refraction of a material is defined as n = speed of light in vacuum = c speed of light in material v For any two different, transparent - translucent materials, the Relative Index of refraction of material 1, with respect to material 2, is = n1 / n2 where n1 and n2 are the absolute refractive indices of the two transparent - translucent materials. When a ray of coherent white light passes obliquely through the boundary between two materials of unlike indices of refraction, the ray bends, in much the same way as a marching column makes a turn. This phenomenon, called refraction, is shown in Fig. (a). If n2 > n1, the ray refracts as shown in Fig. (a); it bends toward the normal as it enters material 2. If n2 < n1, however, the ray refracts away from the normal. This would be the situation in Fig. (a) if the direction of the ray were reversed. In either case, the incident and refracted rays and the normal all lie in the same plane. The angles 1 and 2 in Fig. (a) are called the angle of incidence and angle of refraction respectively, and are often represented by i and r. SNELL'S LAW: Is the mathematical equation used to express the manner in which a ray refracts at a boundary interface between materials with indices of refraction n1 and n2. Because this equation applies to light moving in either direction along the ray, a ray of light follows the same path when its direction is reversed. To consider the all important Critical Angle for Total Internal Reflection: suppose that a ray of light passes from a material of higher index of refraction to one of lower index, as shown in Fig. (b). Part of the incident ray is refracted and part is reflected at the interface. Because n2 must be larger than n1, it is possible to make n1 large enough so that n2 = 90°. This value for n1 is called the critical angle. For n1 larger than this, no refracted ray can exist; all the light is reflected and kept inside, without escape. The requirements for total internal reflection is that n1 exceed the critical angle nc given by n1 * sin (nc) = n2 * sin(90 degrees) or sin(nc) = n1 / n2 . Because the sine of an angle can never be larger than unity, this relation confirms that total internal reflection can occur only if n1 > n2. A prism can be employed to disperse light into various colors, as shown in Fig. (c). Because the index of refraction of a material varies with wavelength encountered, different colors of light refract differently. In nearly all materials, red is refracted least and blue is refracted most. These same concepts apply for electromagnetic propagation’s in general including the ultraviolet and infrareds (heat wavelengths. Just about everyone has seen a prism refract white light into its component colors. The prism always projects the component colors in a straight line. However, when water droplets after or during a rainfall project the colors in an arched pattern. It is called a rainbow, but how the shape of an arch as opposed to a straight line is projected remains scientifically unexplainable. The stability of a radioactive nucleus measured against spontaneous decay is evaluated by its half-life T½. The half-life is defined as the time in which half of any large sample of identical nuclei will undergo disintegration. The half-life is a fixed number for each isotope. Radioactive decay is a random process. No matter when one begins to observe a material, only half the material will remain unchanged after a time T½; after a time 2T½, only ½ * ½ = ¼ of the material will remain unchanged. After n half-lives have passed, only (½)n of the material will remain unchanged. A simple relation exists between the number N of atoms of radioactive material present and the number Delta N that will decay in a fixed interval of time Delta t. Mathematically it is Delta N = Lambda x N x Delta t where Lambda is the decay constant, and related to the half-life T½ through Lambda x T½ = 0.693. The quantity Delta N / Delta t, which is the rate of disintegration in the sample, is called the activity of the sample. It is equal to Lambda x N, and therefore it steadily decreases with time. The SI (System International) unit for activity is the Becquerel (Bq), where 1 Bq = 1 decay / sec. Scripture has much to say regarding the sun and astronomy: While the term astronomy is not found in the Bible, numerous paragraphs refer to some aspect of the subject. God created the stars (Genesis 1:16), knows their number and names (Psalms 147:4), and is glorified by them (Psalms 19). There are hundreds of biblical connotations to stars [Hebrew: sing. ‘bkaOK’, pl. ‘MybikaOK’, ‘kowkab’, Greek: ‘’, ‘aster’. Indubitably, the early Bible chroniclers were much better acquainted with the theme of astronomy than are many modern people. When God desired to inform Abraham how multitudinous his progeny would be, he took him out and showed him the stars (Genesis 15:5). Later God compared Abraham's posterity not only with the stars, but also with the grains of sand on the seashore (Genesis 22:17). Modern findings have verified that the total number of stars is approximately equal to the number of grains of sand on the seashore, a number so immense it is virtually infeasible for the human mind to apprehend. The Bible refers in a most striking manner to the height of the stars--that is, to their distance from the earth: ‘Is not God in the heights of heaven? And see how lofty are the highest stars!’ (Job 22:12). It happens that the mileage to the most remote stars known are more than five hundred thousand times the diameter of our solar system. The biblical writers were conscious that the stars differ greatly from each other (e.g., 1 Corinthians 15:41). Astronomers have verified that the stars can have vastly different colors, size, density, temperature, and total amount of light emitted. Israel was cautioned not to worship the sun, the moon, and the stars (Deuteronomy 4:19). In spite of such reprimands, sun worship often prevailed. Asa and Josiah, kings of Judah, found it necessary to remove the sun images that had been kept at the entrance to the temple. While there is amazing demonstration in the book of Jasher that the Hebrews had a superior knowledge of the stars and of the heavens, there is little indication in the remainder of scripture that the Hebrew people had indulged very much in the study of astronomy, it is very clear that they recognized a splendid order in the behavior of the heavenly bodies. They conscientiously observed the daily rising of the sun, its regal movement across the sky, and its final setting in the west. This is vivaciously depicted in the narrative of the clash with the Amorites as recorded in Joshua chapter 10, when the sun stood motionless in the middle of the sky. Many theories have been proposed in an attempt to give a scientific explanation to this "long day of Joshua." None is completely satisfactory. It is curious to note that the annals of Chinese history document the occurrence of a “long night” in the same period. It is sufficient to add that this is one of many miracles recorded in the Bible to show that God is the sovereign and guarantor of the universe. More unprecedented than the long day of Joshua when the sun conspicuously stood stationary, is the story of the retrogression of the shadow on the sundial of Ahaz. In this incident the Lord gave King Hezekiah a sign saying, ‘I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz’ (Isaiah 38:8). This is, truly, a noteworthy miracle. If taken literally, this means not only that the earth stopped rotating on its axis, but that it reversed its direction of rotation for a short time [given the hypothesized geometry of the area at that time, the event could represent anywhere from 20- 150 minutes]. Again, scientists have no reply to explain such an event. There are a number of allusions in the scriptures to eclipses of the sun and of the moon (Isaiah 13:10; Joel 2:31; Amos 8:9). Several calculated eclipses of the sun that occurred in Holy Land during FT times are (all in B. C. dates): July 31, 1063 ; August 15, 831; June 15, 763; May 18, 603; May 28, 585. Very conceivably, the prophets Amos and Joel witnessed the eclipse of August 15, 831. Such an eclipse is vividly described by Amos: ‘And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:’ (Amos 8:9). The substance of astrology has been concatenated with astronomy since early times. The reference in Judges 5:20 probably refers to the sway of the stars in the lives of people. The writer states, "From the heavens the stars fought, from their courses they fought against Sisera." Stars are associated with angels: KJVGenesis 22:15 with KJVGenesis 22:17; KJVPsalms 8:3 with KJVPsalms 8:5; KJVPsalms 148:2 with KJVPsalms 148:3; RAPC2 Esdras 7:95 with RAPC2 Esdras 7:97; KJVMatthew 24:29 with KJVMatthew 24:31; KJVMark 13:25 with KJVMark 13:27; KJVRevelation 1:20; KJVRevelation 2:1, KJVRevelation 2:28 with KJVRevelation 3:1; KJVRevelation 8:8 with Revelation 8:10-13; KJVRevelation 9:1; KJVRevelation 12:4; KJVRevelation 22:16. Supernovas may literally represent the disenfranchisement of a great angel. According to the scriptures, the Hebrew people ostensibly had little to do with the subject. However, the significance of the patterns and positions of stars are given in-depth coverage in the Talmud and other Jewish literature. In the Book of Daniel there are repetitive communications made concerning the astrologers. It is to be noted that Daniel and his three friends, though closely associated with astrologers, are always mentioned as keeping themselves detached and undefiled. Repeatedly when the magicians and the astrologers were incapable of performing a devoir, Daniel was able to accomplish important things for the king. Thus, it is apparent that the Bible condemns the pseudo-science of astrology. Probably the most fascinating part of biblical astronomy concerns the star of Bethlehem (Matthew chapter 2). This miraculous appearance, which is called a star, aroused the curiosity of the wise men to such an extent that they followed it for many miles until finally it pointed out the exact place where they wished to go. Although a variety of theories have been proposed, no attempt by modern science has been able to explain this miracle. However, in all likelihood the object was an angelic being. There is much evidence in the Bible that many of the constellations were known to the writers. Kesil (Orion) is mentioned in Job 9:9; Isaiah 13:10; Amos 5:8. Ash or Ayish occurs in Job 9:9, 38:32. Job 9:9 Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. Also, found in Job 38:32 is the term Mazzaroth. Decay Rate (half-life) of Beryllium (Be8). [Beryllium is the second integer multiple of the alpha particle or Helium nucleus.] This of course presumes a “Big Bang” model for the creation of the universe. IF THIS PARAMETER WAS OR WAS IN SOME MANNER TO BECOME SMALLER: No element production heavier than Beryllium would occur and therefore no life chemistry would be possible. *** Initial Mass Excess of the Neutron over the Proton. This of course presumes a “Big Bang” model for the creation of the universe. IF THIS PARAMETER WAS OR WAS IN SOME MANNER TO BECOME LARGER: Neutron decay (isolated neutrons have a half-life of about 19 minutes; decaying into an electron and proton.) would leave too few neutrons to form the heavy elements necessary for life. IF THIS PARAMETER WAS OR WAS IN SOME MANNER TO BECOME SMALLER: Proton decay would ultimately prevail over the long time span, causing ALL STARS to collapse rapidly into dense neutron stars or black holes. *** Initial excess of Nucleons over Anti-nucleons [In the alleged “Big Bang” theory, the purported primordial singularity theoretically should have shown no predetermined preference for “ordinary matter” – the “everyday stuff” over “anti-matter”; but this predilection is necessary to assume in order to explain the present state of things.]: IF THIS PARAMETER WAS OR WAS IN SOME MANNER TO BECOME LARGER: Too much radiation in the ultra-fast matter/anti-matter annihilation process for stars, planets and life to form. IF THIS PARAMETER WAS OR WAS IN SOME MANNER TO BECOME SMALLER: Antimatter would have predominated resulting in insufficient matter for stars, galaxies, planets and life to form. Polarity of the Water Molecule [the H-O-H molecule is not linear, a straight line or 180 degrees. Because of Oxygen’s greater sharing of electrons, the bond is covalent and polar; meaning it has negative and positive saliencies.]: IF THIS PARAMETER WAS OR WAS IN SOME MANNER TO BECOME LARGER: The Heat of Fusion and Vaporization of water would be too great for life to exist. IF THIS PARAMETER WAS OR WAS IN SOME MANNER TO BECOME SMALLER: The Heat of Fusion and Vaporization of water would be too small for life to exist. Liquid water would become too inferior a solvent for life chemistry to proceed; ice would not float (ice would become more dense) leading to a runaway planetary freeze-up. Supernovae Eruptions. This of course presumes a “Big Bang” model for the creation of the universe. IF TOO NEAR: Intense Radiation would exterminate, retard or mitigate (with the exception of maybe the cockroaches!) life on planet earth. IF TOO FAR AWAY: There would be insufficient introduction of heavy element stellar ashes into our solar system for the formation of rocky planets. IF TOO FREQUENT: Life on our planet would be exterminated. Daniel 8:10 “And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.”. 1 Corinthians 15:41 “There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.”. Revelation 8:12 “And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.”. Revelation 12:4 “And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.”. IF TOO INFREQUENT: There would be inadequate quantities of heavy elemental stellar cinders for the formation of rocky planets. IF TOO LATE IN THE ANNALS OF THE UNIVERSE: Life on the planet would be exterminated by radiation given off by exploding stars. The present solar wind [composed of nucleons, high-energy rays, alpha, beta and gamma emissions and other atomic nuclei etc.] represents the proper controlled burning of a typical star in our sun’s class. IF TOO SOON IN THE EARLY ANNALS OF THE UNIVERSE: There would be inadequate quantities of heavy elemental stellar cinders for the formation of rocky planets. White Dwarf Binaries: IF THESE PHEOMENA WERE TOO FEW: Unsatisfactory quantities of Fluorine produced for life chemistry to proceed. Due to the size, mass, distance from each other, rotational rate and mode of tearing each other apart, these binaries are in the necessary state [God, of course, does not need these condition in order for Him to create His universe.] to produce Fluorine as revealed by spectroscopic analysis. This particular process of star destruction is presently one of the rare observed ways Fluorine is found to be produced; the other being fission products or by proper bombardment in the laboratory. Trace or minute amounts of Fluorine are required in various enzymes, proteins, vitamins etc. for life’s chemicals to properly function. In addition to proper functioning, the inclusion of proper amounts of Fluorine in some things like teeth formation can produce therapeutic, beneficial tooth decay resistant mechanisms IF THESE PHEOMENA WERE TOO PLENTIFUL: There would be unacceptable disruption of planetary orbits from stellar density perturbations; all life on nearby planets would be exterminated. IF TOO SOON: Inadequate amounts of heavy elements would have been made for suitable quantities of Fluorine production. IF TOO LATE: Fluorine would have been created too late for incorporation into proto-planetary formation. Without Fluorine life chemistry cannot proceed. This is also true for Magnesium as it is an essential element in chlorophyll. Nitrogen to C14 conversion in the upper atmosphere [The nuclear equation is 14N (n – slow thermal neutron bombardment, ejects a p)  14C (mass = 14.003 Amu) + 0.6 Mev]: IF TOO MUCH: This would and likely does invalidate the assumption of a fixed ratio of C12 to C14 employed as a totally reliable way of dating carboniferous substances. If the conversion process was so intense, penetrating and pervasive, then the very Nitrogen composition of intermediary and lower levels of the atmosphere would be altered. This would impact all farming. It is well known that early spring snowfalls of relative light amounts, which melt the same day fertilize the soil. This is known as the poor farmer’s fertilizer and is quite effective in rendering healthy and abundant crops. The destruction of significant amounts of Nitrogen into Carbon, would tend to impact the greenhouse effect. IF TOO LITTLE: At the present time it is unsure what lack of sufficient Nitrogen would have on the planetary environment, however, the Nitrogen in the Nitrogen fixing organisms in the soil would be adversely impacted. In addition, most living things can not live in an atmosphere of 100% Oxygen. Most land based, large sized animals were designed to occupy and breathe an environment of 79% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen and 1% incidentals. Exotic Matter, sometimes referred to as Dark Matter is postulated to be a non-luminous substance that cannot be directly detected by observing any form of electromagnetic radiation, but whose existence is insinuated by certain theoretical considerations and indirect empirical measurements. Determining if dark matter exists, in what quantity, and what its effects are, have astonishing implications for the workings of the universe. Three cardinal considerations imply that exotic matter exists. The first to contemplate is the rotation rate of galaxies. Galaxies near our Milky Way appear to be rotating faster than would be expected based on the amount of visible matter that appears to be contained in these galaxies. Some astronomers are of the opinion there is acceptable evidence to conclude that, based on its rate of rotation, up to 90 percent of the matter in a typical galaxy is invisible, or perhaps is a black hole. The second consideration is predicated on the presence of clusters of galaxies. Numerous galaxies in the universe are grouped together in clusters. Some astronomers reason that if some rational conjectures are acknowledged—specifically, that the clustered galaxies are bound together by gravity, and that the clusters formed billions of years ago—then it ensues that more than 90 percent of the matter in a given cluster is composed of exotic matter. Otherwise, the proponents of this interpretation argue, clusters would be deficient of sufficient mass to keep them together, since in the intervening years the galaxies would have separated by now. The third consideration that indicates that exotic matter exists is based on the inflationary alleged big bang model. Of the three propositions inferring the existence of exotic matter, this last one is the most controversial. The inflationary big bang model alleges that the universe went through a period of extremely rapid expansion while in it’s infant stages. However, if the inflationary big bang model is supposedly correct, then the cosmological constant for the expansion of the universe is close to one. In order for this constant to be near one, the total mass of the universe must be more than 100 times the amount of visible mass that appears to be in the universe. This calculation indicates that more than 99 percent of the mass of the universe must exist in the form of exotic matter. There are several possible candidates for the substance that constitutes exotic, dark matter. These include neutrinos with mass, undetected brown dwarf stars (stars that are smaller and much fainter than the sun), black holes, and exotic subatomic particles whose properties presently evade detection by electromagnetic radiation observation. The shape of spiral galaxies, conch shells, and innumerable other shapes, patterns, and cycles are based on the “golden ratio”. There are several very famous numbers, actually irrational numbers that were known in antiquity. One, even suggested in scripture - 1 Kings 7:23, 2 Chronicles 4:2 – is pi () = 3.141592654 ,,, . This constant is found as the ration of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, C/d = pi. Another famous number represented by a letter is e, the base of the natural logarithm, e = 2.718281828 ,,, . It also has the unique property that the derivative of ex = ex. That is to say that the slope of the curve is equal to the same value of the function evaluated for the same point on the x-axis. There is another ratio represented by the Greek letter phi () = 1.618033989 ,,, . It can be expressed as 0.5 +  . If these universal constants were altered to the slightest degree, up or down, vast structural would occur. No doubt that life, or life as it is seen today, would not exist Types of Galaxies: IF TOO ELLIPTICAL: Star formation would cease before there would be sufficient time for heavy element accumulations necessary for life chemistry. IF TOO IRREGULAR: Occasional, but intense radiation bursts would be too severe for planets in nearby planets for life to exist. Moreover, there would be insufficient heavy element production necessary for life chemistry. To reiterate, if God allowed the following parameters, to drift by more than  0.01% of present values, life would cease to exist. Ultraviolet radiation is produced artificially by electric-arc lamps. Natural ultraviolet radiation is produced primarily by the sun. Ultraviolet radiation can be injurious to living things, particularly when the wavelengths are small. Ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths below 3000 Å is used to sterilize surfaces as it kills bacteria and disables viruses. In humans, exposure to ultraviolet radiation of wavelengths under 3100 Å can cause sunburn; prolonged exposure is thought to be a leading cause of skin cancer. The earth's atmosphere protects living organisms from the sun's ultraviolet radiation. If all the ultraviolet radiation produced by the sun were allowed to reach the surface of the earth, virtually all life on earth would probably be destroyed. The ozone layer (O3) of the atmosphere absorbs almost all of the short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation, and much of the long-wavelength ultraviolet radiation. However, ultraviolet radiation is not entirely harmful; a large portion of the vitamin D that humans and animals need for proper health is produced when the human's or animal's skin is irradiated by ultraviolet rays. Most ordinary window glass and dark sunglasses made of glass are transparent to visible light, but is opaque to a large portion of ultraviolet rays, particularly ultraviolet rays with short wavelengths. Surface Gravity Force (Escape Velocity: [Is the minimum inaugural velocity essential for an object to escape the gravitational attraction of a cosmological object, and to continue traveling away from it without the use of additional propulsive forces. The escape velocity is usually given in terms of the surface-launch velocity, excluding aerodynamic friction. Objects traveling at less than 0.71 × escape velocity of a celestial body cannot achieve a stable orbit. This orbital period of 3,500 yr. harkens back to Moses and thus symbolizes great deliverance for God’s people. As a new 11-year cycle begins, the magnetic-field direction of leading sunspots in each hemisphere reverses. Thus, the full solar cycle, including the magnetic-field polarity, takes approximately 22 years. In addition, the sunspots on the sun at any given time tend to occur at the same latitude in each hemisphere. This latitude moves from about 45° to about 5° during the sunspot cycle. Because each sunspot normally exists for, at most, only a few months, the 22-year solar cycle reflects deep-seated and long-lasting processes in the sun and not just the properties of individual sunspots. Recent photographs from the SOHO satellite shows sunspots of longer duration than previously documented. Ground based ozone is one of the major constituents of smog; it is very oxidizing and causes premature aging effects on just about everything. Recently deployed NASA satellites designed for lightening observations have shown (proven) that 90% of all lightening strikes, hit land and of the ones that do strike water their intensity of discharge is 90% of the strength of those over land. These data make Miller’s primordial “soup” experiments invalid. In Miller’s experiments the electrical discharge was premeditatedly designed to obtain the amino groups he wanted. In that fashion the experimental variable of electrical discharge was “rigged”. In addition, the discharge employed in the Miller experiment lasted continuously for two weeks,,, no bolt of natural lightening has such a continuous duration; and Miller adjusted the energy input to keep obtaining the results he wanted, such judicial control over experimental variables would not be operative in a “random” universe. In fact, the presence of intelligence in Miller’s experiments, by introducing the correct elements, in proper quantities, under the proper circumstances, simply furthers the fact that Life is the result of divine intellect. The irony for the evolutionist is that the more complex the machinery and design of laboratory experiments to cleverly unlock bio-chemical operations just furthers the proof that life was intelligently designed. Plate Tectonics, serves as the premise of global geologic structural deformations, that has been employed as a fairly recent model for comprehension of the structure, history, and dynamics of the earth's crust. The hypothesis is based on the observation that the earth's solid crust is broken up into about a dozen or so semi-rigid, major plates. The boundaries of these plates are zones of physical and mechanical forces and pressures, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions tend to transpire and concentrate. The areas where the plates meet can occur under the oceans as demonstrated by the Mid Atlantic ridge (A geosyncline site). In the North Atlantic, the velocity of movement is only about 1 cm (about 0.4 in) per year, while in the Pacific it amounts to more than 4 cm (almost 2 in) annually. Continental plates breach, drift apart, and eventually collide with each other. Such collisions crumple geosynclinal sediments, thus creating future mountain chains. One of the more compelling arguments for continental drift was advanced by the geometric matching of continental margins, which are postulated to have rifted apart. Support for this theory, is found in rock formations on opposite sides of the Atlantic—in Brazil and West Africa—match in age, type, structure and contour. Furthermore, they often contained fossils of terrestrial creatures that could not have swum from one continent to the other. However, no such match is found—for example, along the entire circum-Pacific belt (sometimes referred to as the “ring of fire”) or along the Burma-Indonesian sector of the Indian Ocean. This discrepancy called into question if the continents had indeed drifted apart as postulated. There were dynamic problems unique to Pacific-type coasts where earthquakes associated with these belts are at shallow depths near the outer (ocean) side of volcanic island arcs, but that the depth of seismic shocks increases until it reaches a maximum of about 700 km (about 430 miles) at a distance of 700 km landward from the front of the arc. By close seismic analysis of a single faulting instance, it was concluded that this geometry represented a fault plane extending through the crust into the upper mantle and inclined downward, toward land, at an angle of about 45°. A similar underthrusting, of the Southern Alps beneath the Northern Alps, was eventually dubbed subduction. The existence of similar subduction planes has now been demonstrated along almost all Pacific-type coasts. Most of these belts disclose a major shear-fault system that runs parallel to the general mountain system. Over long time intervals, the movement on the fault changes from gradual to abrupt, and a shift of about 1 to 5 m (about 3 to 15 ft) may be produced by just a single earthquake. During subduction, ocean crust is constantly being drawn down into the mantle and melted. Because it is continually recycled, no part of the modern ocean crust is, in geologically terms, very old. An important effect of the melting of subducted ocean crust is the production of new magma. When subducted ocean crust melts, the magma that forms rises upward from the plane of subduction, deep within the mantle, to erupt on the earth's surface. Eruption of magma melted by subduction has created long, arc-shaped chains of volcanic islands, such as Japan, the Philippines, and the Aleutians. Where an oceanic tectonic plate is subducted beneath continental crust, the magma produced by subductive melting erupts from volcanoes situated among long, linear mountain chains, such as the Cordillera, up to 100 km (about 62 miles) inland from the zone of subduction. In addition to creating and feeding continental volcanoes, melting of subducted ocean crust is responsible for the formation of certain kinds of ore deposits of valuable metallic minerals. The interval of time between the crossing of a meridian by the moon at one point and the next high water at that point is called the lunitidal interval, or the high tide interval for that point. The low tide interval is the period between the time the moon crosses the meridian and the next low tide. Accompanying the vertical rise and fall of water are various horizontal or lateral movements of water commonly known as tidal currents or tidal streams, which are very different from the common ocean currents such as the Gulf Stream, which provides substantial quantities of warmth to the British Isles during their winter months. In confined areas, a tidal current flows for a little more than 6 hours in an upstream or shoreward direction, corresponding to high tide; it then reverses and flows for approximately the same time in the opposite direction, corresponding to low tide. During the period of reversal, the water is characterized by a state of rest, or calm, known as slack water. A current flowing toward the shore or upstream is called flood current; that flowing in a direction away from land or downstream is known as ebb current. At various times on the open sea waves of five to six feet in height, called tsunamis or harbor waves, rush towards shore with velocities near 500 mph and strike the surrounding shore with tremendous force as they rise to heights of 50 – 60 feet just prior to attaining the shore and cause considerable damage to life and property. These waves are not caused by natural tidal phenomena, but by earthquakes, mid-ocean volcanic eruptions, and serious atmospheric disturbances. The energy of tides has been harnessed to produce electricity in France. The highest high tides in the world occur in the Bay of Fundy in Canada, where the difference between high and low tide is about 18 m (about 60 ft). The erection of a tidal power plant across Passamaquoddy Bay, could produce many megawatts of electric power. I want you to rewrite the above leaving the "God" aspect out, and explain it as an effect that could have happened just the way it did happen. Yes, if this was too much or that was too little things would have been different - but they weren't too much or too little, and, it could have just - happened. Your approach is based on a pre-supposition, not unlike the biblical scholars of 150 years ago. That pre-supposition is the existence of a character that entered our history 5400 years ago, and developed into various forms as time went on - that of some great god out there in the vastness of the heavens. Before that, there was no sign of "god" at all. So, rewrite that and we can compare your two texts side by side. The only reason you wouldn't do that is because your pre-conceived beliefs are getting in the way. Research needs to be thorough, and, all sides need to be looked at. We could all argue your points, but, it would be better if you argued them with yourself first, because I don't think you have done that yet. And if you have, let's take them one by one as single topics. As single topics we could all get involved and those who know much more about the science aspects of this picture than others can voice views as well. |
