Re: Have You Ever Found A Large Amount Of Cash And Returned It?
Was pulling out of the parking lot of the local hardware store and saw a bank envelope. The wind was blowing and it didn't move,so I knew it was full.
Stopped and picked it up. Inside was $1007 in crisp US fiat currency.
I sat in that parking lot 20 minutes fighting the voices in my head.

I finally decided it was probably some elderly person's social security money, so I gave it to the manager to return the money if someone came back for it.
I was right, a codger had come in for a toilet valve that day and dropped his envelope in the parking lot.
Manager said he came in 2 days later telling them his GD kids had stolen his $1007 social security money.
He cried when she returned it.

Boy I could've used that money though!

25 years ago we found a wallet on the beach in Mexico. The owner was from California. We returned the wallet, cards and 800$ and for a reward he sent us a thank you with 100$. Never keep what isn’t yours if you can return it to the owner.

When I was 19, working full time and just spent $750 on a new engine for my car, I was down to nothing, just had 3 days bus fare, and a loaf of bread in my fridge, I was walking through a park on the way from the bus stop and prayed to God to get me through the week, amen . ..and the next step I took was on a $5 bill . Bought a jar of peanut butter and enough mac and cheese to get me to the next paycheck .

Found a fanny pack filled with hundred dollar bills in NYC on a pizzeria floor. It was something like $4,500. I turned in the fanny pack with the person's ID, credit cards etc, and kept the cash as a present to myself for having returned the other items.

That was a great summer.

Yes.

I found $1000 in a checkbook, I returned it to the Woman's bank and gave it to the manager. The woman got the money and checkbook back and called me to say thank you.

She was a disabled woman, the cash was for her caregiver.

Re: Have You Ever Found A Large Amount Of Cash And Returned It?
I was a newspaper carrier for ten years. I found about 10 wallets, money laying on the ground and in the street, bags with valuables. I always returned it to the Jelly Donut in town, called that person and told him where to pick it up. Many told me to wait there for a reward but I told them I'm working and can't hang around.

Most interesting finds.... a wallet with one dollar in it and a condom, an emergency flare kit with a GPS device for hot air balloons, a completely empty wallet of anything but five $20 dollar bills... which i kept.

Things I learned... most people don't keep their own phone number in their wallet and I usually end up calling their best friend.

The people who lose their wallets the most are teenagers, drunks and old farts.

Best advice...Return lost items otherwise it will haunt you.

Re: Have You Ever Found A Large Amount Of Cash And Returned It?
Yes. I found 2,500. in a purse at a flea market table of purses. I turned it in to lost and found. Later, a lady screamed. I went over and asked her what happened and she said she had lost her purse! I asked her to describe it and told her that yes, it was waiting for her in the office. She found me later and wanted to give me a reward of 5 bucks, but I declined. Another time I saw 20 bucks on the floor of the movie concession stand. I stepped on it and picked it up nonchalantly. I kept it. I’m complicated like that. I’ve never felt right about keeping that money.

I was out of work and down to about my last nickel when I found a twenty on the sidewalk with a dozen or so postage stamps. I sure jumped on that quick and appreciated it very much.

Finding currency on the ground or the floor used to be more common but people use cards so much now, they don't drop cash like they used to.

Found a wallet loaded with cash in the subway, did not count it. Took it straight to the station agent. To me it is not even a temptation, 10 dollars or a million dollars means nothing to me.

One time in Vegas, about 3:00AM...I had been doing well at the craps table for the last 6 hours...As I'm leaving the table, a guy walks by with a nice/large chip holder that's looks full.

He takes about 4-5 steps past where I am, and he drops 3 pink-and-gold chips on the floor and keeps walking away.

I step up and pick up the chips to my shock find out they're $5000 chips (each).

I catch up to the guy and tell him "Excuse me, but as you were walking by you dropped these chips". I handed him the 3 chips, he looks at the chips, looks at me, and then reaches into his chip holder and pulls out (2) $1000 chips and hands it to me saying "Thank you for your honesty".

Re: Have You Ever Found A Large Amount Of Cash And Returned It?
in 1983 I Found $560,000 in cash while fishing in international waters off the coast of California. Literally in a abandon Pontoon. May of been other things on the boat but i had no interest in that kinda trouble..I was gonna put it in the bank but my Dad said i could not. Gave my Dad and Mom 100 grand and i went and lived in Vegas for a month. I played the slot machines daily then deposited the winnings at the local bank. By the time i went home i had 330,000 in the bank and all cleaned through slot machine winnings. I bought 5 houses and about 10 years ago i sold them and walked away with a crisp 2 mill. I am in my late 50s now and currently retired on a budget but i had a great life and still living a dream...

When i was volunteering at the salvation army, i was sorting clothing out the back and found some old suit jacket with army medallions on it, in one of the pockets was a couple of grand in 50 dollar bills. I debated in my head for about 30 seconds on what to do. I was flat broke and unemployed at the time but decided to do the right thing and notify the manager.

Im sure the salvos got to keep the money i n the end...

For the next few days i wished i had just kept the money for my self.

Ive found a few wallets with cash when i was a teenager, took the cash and threw the wallet in the bin.

A few months ago when i was walking to my car after work, broke and a couple of days from pay day, wishing i had 50 bucks to go get high i look down on the ground and there is a 50 dollar note blowing in the wind. I snatched that up and went and got high. That was a good day!

Also once a few years ago when i was dating this stoner chick and we were unable to get onto any weed for days. We had gone out for dinner and while walking to the restaurant i saw a pouch of tobbaco on the ground that looked like it had something in it. Picked it up and inside was a quarter of weed.

Funny how things come to you sometimes when you need them.

Ive had lots of other small finds of 10 dollar notes and small amounts of weed, meth and heroin. I always put that stuff to good use!

At my office there was a corner of the property that officers from the city would sit in order to flag down easily people who are turning right on a red light with a red arrow on and on ramp to the highway.

The cops would just sit there and finally they brought chairs from their own office so they could sit under the tree in the shade between lights cycles when I was cleaning up around that area I found a envelope with $1200.00 and the first name David.

I knew this was dirty cop money that distributed under my tres on my families property.

I kept it with that shit.banana2

About 2 years ago while out walking at night, found someone's wallet on the sidewalk. It contained some money, ID, work related badges and credit and debit cards. Turned it over to the cops, who returned it to the owner. Got a call from the officer later that evening saying the wallet was given back to the owner who wanted to relay the message to me "Thank you very much"

NO!

It is "off the grid" public property once someone "loses it" You have no obligation to find who lost it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78088150

No.That's wrong. If something is lost, or rather misplaced you have an obligation to give it back to the owner. That doesn't mean you are obligated to search for the owner.

Re: Have You Ever Found A Large Amount Of Cash And Returned It?
I was in a rehab facility run by the salvation army. I worked with incoming donations - specifically shoes and purses. The lady running the facility was dirty. She taught me how to identify designer purses and instructed me to set them in a specific bin and had me load them into her personal vehicle weekly. She took away 150-200 purses a week.

I found lots of money in the purses. I think some people would forget the cash, while others were hoping to leave a gift for the needy people shopping at thrift stores (where the items ended up).

I turned in a small amount as not to arouse suspicion. I used most of what I found to help purchase food and necessities for other people in the rehab program with me.

Edit: I probably cleared a couple grand in about 3 months.

Edit 2: They made everyone in rehab program work 40 hours a week and paid $3 a week per person starting and advanced $1 per week with a maximum $20 weekly payout.

Over 15 years ago, my brother in law and I bought a Fountain 40 footer in Florida in bad cosmetic shape but seemingly good V8s , with the intent to restore it to new condition. There was a lot of structural fiberglass that needed to be rebuilt. As the dismantling proceeded, we uncovered two duffle bags full of cash.

Nope did not report it.
Cash never saw the inside of a bank - we did not want to be asked questions.

Yep, we kept it, and kept quiet, just very gradually spending the money.

Smart way to do it

Found a bit over $200. on a Friday afternoon in a Target parking lot. It was scrunched up and laying in a puddle beside my car. We took it home and dried it after I went to the service desk and said, if anyone comes in looking for money they dropped, please have them call me and left my phone number. They did call, identified the amount lost, and came over to get their money back. They had just cashed their paycheck and that was all the money they had for the week! It was a young couple and they almost cried getting that money back. We hugged them and chatted about it, and all was well in the world for at least that moment in time. The end.
