Re: The Backyard/Barnyard Chicken Thread
I sell the eggs, i don't have enough chickens for everyone who wants to buy. I don't sell at farmers markets because of the government forms and bullshit ropes you have to jump through.
Selling eggs i make enough to buy their feed, with a little extra left over to keep the coop in shape. They free range on our acreage and with the toms and our 3 dogs i don't worry to much about predators.
Each and everyone of the hens are tame will sit in anyones lap. The roosters are good boys cause they don't want to go in the pot. Chickens are awesome, smart and friendly. What people don't realize is that chickens come in all sizes Serama lay small eggs but would be so easy to keep in the city, then bantams. I think everyone should have a couple of hens inthe backyard.

So what breeds does everyone have? I started out with sexlinks, i will never own one again i found them short lived they stop laying at about 2-3 years. Right now i have brahmas, jersey giants wyndotts, some buffs, Marans and of course EE’s. Then somehow one of rooster and a hen is throwing chicks that lay olive eggs. A bumch of backyard mixes and my oldest hen a susssex turned 9 this past spring.

We had 3 regular hens, 2 white, 1 brownish, and then my son got these Black Japanese fighting chickens(shamo). He thought we had one rooster and one hen, but they're both roosters. I've got to be honest, when they come running at me when I go out the back door, there is a slight panic. They're only about 3 months old but they are getting Really big. They're supposed to be about 3 feet tall when grown, which is a big assed bird. Like all our animals, they come running to get some food. Except the cats, that is. cats aren't that humble.
The amazing thing is that all animals have different personalities. Chickens seem to like to be picked up and held.

Re: The Backyard/Barnyard Chicken Thread
Love my chickens. I have 22 roosters and 37 hens and they have a very good life on our place. They used to free range but now they have about 1/2 acre yard with a high wood fence around it. Trying to round up that many chickens of an evening was a challenge so their yard helps keep the Owls Hawks and coons at bay.

The ones I have named come when I call them and even the roosters let me pick them up and move them around. Have a little house, a larger little house and 5 closet size enclosures plus the roosts in the pens. Their living area is under roof.

Nice of you to make this post.

Re: The Backyard/Barnyard Chicken Thread
We moved out to the country two years ago but I just got aorund to overhauling the old coop up by the pond and got myself 10 layers. We have electricity up there but no plumping, dang it.

So I just set up a pump from my pond to a big rain barrel for winter (and year round) watering for my ladies. The rain barrel has a stock tank heater in it to keep the water from freezing. Once it snows there's no way I'll be able to get the lawn mower and trailer up there, which is how I get water up there now.

They free range during the day and head for the coop at dusk and I love my eggs! This country living thing has been my dream for nearly two decades and I'm love it!
