People always seem to forget China has nuke subs too. And they are likely permanently rotating on the american coastlines.
There is no possible defence. No possibility of interception.
But certain death of humanity as we know it.
That is the game trump is playing and you can bet your ass China also has a first strike option.
China is not Iraq. China can destroy you.
So in this reality we can be 99% sure nothing serious will happen. After all, we have a stable genius at the helm, surrounded by peaceloving advisors.

Part of that was coming up with boost phase interception of missiles at sea.
Either a surface ship or one of our subs can shadow any Chicom boomers near enough to launch. Upon detecting a launch of an SLBM by the sub, they can launch anti-missile interceptors. A surface ship would be optimal in this role.
Most people think subs are not detectable when deep underwater. That is NOT NECESSARILY SO.
Also, any boomer can be taken out pretty quickly, possibly before it can launch all of it's payloads.
BTW, I do NOT advocate war with China. Prez T is using economic pressure to pursue a level field in trade.
We don't need intermediate range missiles in Asia. We have a secure second strike capability with current assets.
The advantage of IRBMs is very fast time on target and accuracy measure (perhaps) of less than one meter. At that level, you can drop a warhead down an air shaft into an underground bunker.
The most likely flash point for war would be an attempted invasion of Taiwan. Taiwan should consider a counter threat of asymmetrical warfare such as smart sea mines cutting off all sea access by China.
