if you like yams, you can certainly make mashed sweet potatoes. Or sweet potato fries.

Certain potatoes make better mashed potatoes. It's a very subjective experience and based on availability. Since the moisture content is an aspect of mashed potatoes then drier potatoes ie slightly older potatoes are tricks usedby some to make mashed or even fries.

Old timers used to fry mashed potatoes and certain ethnic folks, like the Swedish, make these too.

By the way, when camping, a fried mashed potato cake is way easier than making hashed browns. They are great with eggs and sausage. In fact, I bet after serving them for breakfast once, people ask you to please make them again.

We use red potatoes, not peeled, quartered and boiled until soft. Then I add goat milk cream from the milk my wife gets from her dwarf goats, organic butter, Himalayan salt, and white pepper.

For the gravy it’s beef burgandy gravy made from beef base, wine, and thickened with beef fat/ organic flour roux. No mushrooms. Great with beef or elk.

Standard mashed potato recipe, you know, peel and chop those bad boys into quarters and then put in a pot of salted water, let them boil until nice and soft.

I took a sauce pan and threw in some fresh garlic all chopped up and sauteed it a bit before adding pure amish roll butter and milk. Let that melt down nice, stir a bit, then pour into the taters while I was mashing them in the drained pot.

Made a homemade gravy from frying up a few pieces of bacon and then adding flour and milk to the grease to top the potatoes with. Little dash of salt and pepper and I swear they were so good I could have died happy right there.

cheers

Yukon Gold is my favorite for mashed potatoes. I boil until they are “al dente,” rinse to get the extra starch out, then use a potato ricer to mash them. The ricer is like a giant garlic press.

I add milk and rolled Amish butter, then anything I want to flavor with after that.

Your recipe sounds delish!

To make excellent doughnuts REQUIRES unsalted mashed potatoes. That secret ingredient and cardamom is why Krispy Kream doughnuts taste so good. I would spoil the counselors at summer camp. Those young people worked from 6am-10:30 pm and then took a break in the break room.

So I would sometimes make a batch of homemade doughnuts which delighted them.

Once you have a yeast doughnut recipe you like, with the unsalted mashed potatoes added, then you of course can serve them with various glazes (like chcolate), dusted with coffectioner's sugar (with cornstarch as that makes it tastes creamy), or with a filling like fresh raspberry. Lemon filling that is freshly made is very popular with ladies.

Moravian sugar cake - Wikipedia
Moravian sugar cake is a sweet coffee cake that is often made in areas around Moravian Church settlements, particularly in Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Is that how Krispy Kreme happened to start up in Winston-Salem ?

P.S. I think I may have talked to you before ? Either way, the only thing I object to about Winston-Salem is the 'eugenics' history there.

Yes, my wife insisted heavy cream instead of milk and unsalted butter. Yukon Gold are delicious.

A ricer will give you consisitency and even texture.

I WANT that Moravian recipe. The Moravian missionaries were among the kindest to Native Americans. That is not forgotten

Hawaiian bread will often have mashed potatoes in it to add sweetness.

The reason bread tastes sweet when chewing it is the saliva and mastication predigests and begins to break the complex carbohydrates into simpler sugars. So this is seemingly accelerated when mashed potatoes are added.

A nutritionist or a biochemist could explain it better.

This is exactly how I make them, except sometimes I add about a fourth of a cup of sour cream to make them a little creamier. They're easy to make and delicious as a side to traditional Thanksgiving-type meals as well as typical weeknight dinners.

It's such a simple recipe, but sometimes those are the ones that turn out the best.

Yukon gold with TRUFFLE OIL.

You'll never go back to dried tater flakes out of a box.
 Quoting: Crypto-Tard

Oh NOW THATS a freaking idea right there!

Never deal with dried flakes except co-workers at time lol but the truffle oil would be a great touch.

You talking about truffle oil in frying the yukon gold potatoes? or baking them?
 Quoting: C. M. M.

You mash the potatoes and after smashing them, you add the truffle oil, salt, white pepper and some grated parmesan cheese.

Yum.

For a rustic and healthier touch, you can leave the skins on the potatoes. You could also add a touch of garlic, but I personally wouldn't want anything to interfere with the Truffle Oil.

My mashed potato recipe is similar to yours, minus the amish butter as I can't get that here, so I won't post it. However there is a really good looking roasted potato recipe I want to try:

Whipping cream instead of milk, or half-and-half also works.

Load them up like a baked potato.

If you're using garlic, roast it first.

I like Ketchup on mine, but I'm a freak.

By the way, on the subject of Gravy:

If you ever see "Heinz: Signature Recipe" gravy and wonder if it's any good but don't want to spend the extra dollar, well, here's your review:

They are absolutely no better, at all, and are possibly worse.

One time I was in Durango, CO and there was this restaurant with this dish called "Lobster Yukon Smashers".

Mashed Yukon potatoes with chunks of herby buttery lobster blended in. The richest most decadent thing I think I ate that whole decade. s226
