I remember the "good old days" when a roll of duct tape and a piece of baling wire were a part of one's "emergency supplies" along with a set of jumper cables etc. Don't forget a bent clothes hanger kept under the bumper for the occasions on which the keys were left locked in the car. Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. “They’ve got us surrounded again, the poor bastards.” - U.S. Army Paratrooper at Bastogne |

User ID: 77479757 United States 07/18/2019 10:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Autoweek magazine recently had a photo of a pick up truck in Florida that had a piece of plywood across the removed rear window and he had put in a small window ac and had the generator in the bed of the truck. That would really be cold in the cab part! But how could he be street legal without being about to see out the back and use his rear view mirror? Why didn't cops bag him? And why was his truck unattended while parked at the store? Anyone could have lifted the genny and been gone! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77831632 Bet the truck had towing mirrors. Perfectly legal. And he may have bolted the generator to the bed of the truck. That written by someone (me) that has replaced two vehicle AC compressors and gotten the AC working, and I never went to HVAC or vehicle AC school--heat transfer and fluid flow is not rocket science, it is junior high school physics. He spent more on that than simply fixing the problem. This was not a "poor people" issue. Da fukk, he didn't spend a dime on that lifted rig! Shit was HOT. |

It’s Florida, I’m guessing it’s not too difficult finding a used or discarded generator. Funny as heck, and in an odd way, I’m impressed with his ingenuity |

A several hundred dollar fix to an under fifty dollar problem--that is why it is funny. Oh, no. Let's assume that's a merc 300td. The compressor alone is $300-500. If it needs an evaporator core then you're pulling the entire instrument panel to get to it. That's 12-14 hours and you won't find a shop much under $100/hr these days. A/C work is pricey. |

Ever get a price quote on repairing a Mercedes AC unit on that size sedan that basically needs to be replaced? Don't think $ Hundred$$. Think $ THOUSANDS$$ (and not 1, or 2 either, think $4,000ish to $5,000iah) I have no idea why it is so expensive but I decided right then and there that was LAST Mercedes I would EVER own!! Everyone that commented on my post is correct. I graduated with honors in physics which included heat transfer and fluid flow, not everyone does nor knows how to repair air conditioning. Sometimes I can be really dumb in believing the general public is smarter than they are or has 'military grade' scavenging skills. |
