Re: Yea, so my son hacked my pacemaker...
So the device is designed to interrogate the rhythm not just shock your heart.

If you have a day or a week of abnormal heart rythm and it's turned off or it's not reporting, but its below the threshold of shocking, they need the rhythm information as a precurser to shock. You would never know it and it may need to be adjusted.

People sometimes have bad rythms and the devise does not fire, so without interrogating it they would not know to change the settings.

They need the reporting to adjust the settings to have proper function of the device so it will function correctly to pace or shock.

You want it on so it can be evaluated, it is a complex device.

Well I report for interrogation every 3 months this or so. It sounds like you work in the field. Do you not think that is sufficient? Would you think the need outweighs any potential danger?
 Quoting: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Talk it over with your cardiologist or heart failure doctor or whoever put it in.

Turning off the function may not be a good idea.

Found this article on it. I never knew it was a thing. Sounds like it can be done with other medical devices also maybe?

Kind of scary, makes you wonder if they already have kill codes embedded in these devices?

With that said, a lot of these newer vehicles have so many computers and wifi capabilities, it is SCARY. My brother in law tried to avoid a huge tumble weed on the highway in his new car and it auto-corrected and would NOT allow him to swerve into the other lane to avoid the object!!! FUCK THAT!!!

Not sure. But my son said any hacker would have to be a Medtronic tech also to make it work. I really hope they are working on some kind of security for it. This just happened this weekend so I am calling Medtronic in the morning to ask more questions.

Re: Yea, so my son hacked my pacemaker...
To set the background, I have a cardiomyopathy and my doc implanted a pacemaker/ defibrillator years ago due to the possibility of sudden cardiac failure. I am not dependent on it but it is there for emergency. I have had it long enough to have 3 replacements because the battery only last 4-5 years. Well the newest one is readable from home. They sent me home with an interrogation device that reads my data and sends it in nightly for analysis through wifi. Pretty cool huh?

My son works cyber security for a branch of the Gov. I won't go into details but he is an ethical hacker. They combat criminal hacking obviously. He had heard that it was possible to hack my new device so attempted it and succeeded. I got rid of the interrogation device they gave me and told them I will make appts for device interrogation when needed.

However anyone close enough to intercept my RF signal could do it through wifi. I dont pretend to know how this is done but my son told me they would really have to know the interrogation protocol of my device to adjust the settings, shock me or shut it off. He did get in far enough to read notes left on my diagnosis within the device. It was kind of cool but real creepy also. Still not sure how I feel about it.

Yeah, not sure if I even would want one of those devices but I suppose it's not an option for some folks out there.

The fact that you even have a pacemaker means: 1) you have shit genetics, 2) you eat like shit, 3) modern tech has saved you from your real time to go.

Your son hacking your heart is the least of your concerns.

The fact that you even thought about making this type of comment in the first place should be your primary concern as to why you're simply a troll mad at the next person because your life is itself miserable. Misery loves company.

all forms of matter can be altered.

sleep a little safer knowing you are not alone
you are not a target
you are not without tools to your disposal
you are not some toy to be hacked into

and finally take measures to care for your rhythm and home. know your limits and wifi range. find your favorite thoughts. communicate your struggles and strengths.
and finally be brave to know.
the pacemaker you pace make is a signal that you are never afraid to reach. being mindful will hopefully give you ideas you never admired before.

and finally ill pray no one does that to you
thats a scary thought but each moment that you have be helped from the pacemaker is also a scary thought. im so happy to have talked to you. no more scary thoughts about your pacemaker now. okay?
