What will make beans & rice taste good? What are you stocking that you don't like? Tell us about it.

Haven't read the whole thread yet, so probably this has already been said, but...

If we're going for preps here, stock up on butter powder, cheese powder, powdered chicken, beef, or vegetable broth/stock, and powdered peanut butter. Any or all will liven up the taste of beans and rice.

Dried chopped onions and chives, too.

Of course, go for the longest shelf life, but if we're talking emergency, then out-of-date powdered stuff is somewhat less likely to kill you than out-of-date wet stuff.

If you've got a source of butter, that stuff will make almost anything palatable!

ETA - Buy salt in bulk. It's amazing how much flavor salt adds to bland stuff, and it can be used for preserving, as well.

Would need long time soaking before boiling, i have old dry rice and beans in mylar and buckets since Y2K and 2012 failed doom. I opened to check it and resealed every 3-4 years,still looks ok.

Any bean, cheap tin of chopped tomatoes, garlic, onion and paprika.
Pepper and salt, serve with crusty bread.

Tabasco if no Crystal.

Slightly off topic, but Pooka mentioned coconut oil and I saw some in the store today...organic...stuff was expensive but I picked up a jar anyway. Threw it on top of the prep stash.

Use them to make a hearty soup with ham hock or chicken carcass. Go "old school". Back to the days where nothing was wasted.

Starvation will usually make beans and rice taste pretty good.

LOL, Pepto Bismol, or it's generic, could become a premium item to have since it removes the malodorous stench from farts! LOL

Mirepoix. If you're not starting with that, its gonna be average at best.

I boil a pot of plain water and soak the dry beans in that hot water overnight - just cut off the heat once it comes to a boil and it will be cool enough to work with in the morning.

The next day, pour that bean water out and add fresh water and/or bullion/broth and all your veggies, herbs and spices and simmer until tender. If you aren't opposed to eating meat, I like to put some smoked pork neckbones in there to add flavor. I will usually put those in a net bag though, because when they fall apart during the cooking process, lots of little pieces of neckbone fall out into your beans, and chomping down on one of those is not fun. Pull the net bag out and let it cool down, then you can pick the meat out and put it back into the beans & toss the bones in the trash.

Another bean cooking tip is not to add any salt or tomato based products (or vinegar) while they are cooking, as it tends make the skins tough. At the very end of the cooking period I like to add a little salt and a can of diced tomatoes and green chilies.

I use Chorizo to make Frijoles Charros (Cowboy beans) with fresh homemade tortillas.

Find a good Puerto Rican grandma!

Guacamole and pico de gallo (tomato/onion/peppers/cilantro/lime)

Add a bag of jasmine tea to the rice when cooking for a Thai flavor.

You can make falafel with chickpeas as a bean option.

Is was invented in a small town in South Florida. Besides our local supermarkets, Amazon is indeed where you can get it. Don't give up the chance to sharpen your culinary diversity over a little pride. Just order the damn bottle.

put a bullion cube in the water to cook the rice in, tastes delicious

rice n beans goes with everything, peppers, garlic, onions, etc

Beans and rice both near double when cooked well with lots of liquid.

even though they might lose flavor / color or both over time dried spices as long as they're kept dry they never go "bad"
