some curry sauces are mild if you dont like te heat and no need to add extra hot pepper sauce.

we have a brand of curry sauces over here called pataks, its expesive for a jar unless you buy the jar thats concentrated.

Actually, I don't like the heat, so I am very happy to read that heat is not a requirement in curry! Thank you! I will be looking for it.

Fat.
Buttered rice.
Buttered beans.

Or whatever fat works with your cuisine.

Get a rice cooker and a crockpot. Get the proportion of water right. Don’t try to cook fancy while you are scorching beans and ruining rice.

Seventies cookbook Laurels Kitchen is the very best.

Indian idlis are steamed rice and bean flour cakes, very like cold hominy grits, or a rice cake.

Felafel is great too.

Think of different styles of dishes...

Mexican beans & rice.

Oriental beans & rice.

Bean & rice soup...baked beans...humus.

But to be honest...it's easier to find different things to do with pasta.

If you've been following the news about food shortages and high prices just around the corner, you are wisely stocking food, including beans and rice.

I am doing the same, because beans and rice are cheap, though they won't be for long, and healthy, as well. I just can't stand beans.

So, please tell me your tricks, secrets, hints to make beans and rice actually enjoyable, instead of just a way not to starve.

These people don’t know how to cook. Roast a pork. Stew a pork. Boil a ham hock. Save the broth, drippings, and some grease. Put all that flavorful nummyness in your rice and beans instead of water. Flavor to taste, ;-). Or, you can do the same with beef, or even turkey. You need the richness that comes from the bones and knuckles otherwise beans are dry and rice is tasteless. Tabasco helps a lot. Saracha is California piss.

chick peas are good for a bit of extra protein over beans

houmous / hummus - can be made with chick peas and olive oil. perhaps falael too.

tomato sauce is a base for a lot of dishes, it would take ages to boil tomatoes enough to reduce them to a sauce or puree / paste, maybe its a good idea to buy some tomato puree / paste or tomato powder if its cheap enough.

the pataks sauces even 2 chilli pictures is bareable not realy hot, thouh this varoies by person and you could always use less of the hot inredients in proportion to the others.

stocking up on oli seems logical too, wether that be olive oil or others.

for below links sainsburys is a uk supermarket.

i used to buy pasta ready made from the supermarket and it was delicious, it had spirit vinear, white wine vinegar etc in it made real tasty. here it is...

Sainsbury's Cheese & Tomato Pasta Salad 300g
[link to www.sainsburys.co.uk (secure)]

i hear balsamic vinegar adds a lot of flavor to anything too.

i also bought pasta with pine nuts in that was delicious, pine nuts are expesive though, you could stock up o cheaper nuts... i cant find the one i bought but this is similar...

idk how easy it would be to make macoroni out of macoroni and dry cheese powder? or some other cheese that stores well. or even make cheese rom milk apparently mozzarella is easy.

pesto is nice, not sure how you make it.

mozarella, basil leaves, tomato and pesto make a great sandwich filler

eggs without the film (the hen adds a protective layer called “bloom” to the egg) on freshly laid by a chicken store much much longer than eggs you buy from shops with the bloom removed.

Tomatoes I can see, yes.

Hot peppers - sorry - I have a wimpy set of tastebuds. No pepper, no peppers except green. It's okay to laugh at me. I don't blame you!

I think I've only had pinto beans in chili.

I have cooked white beans from scratch, when almost done I added ketchup, molassas, onion powder, and a can of bushed baked beans (I cheated...but it worked).

The extra "gravy" in the can of beans really added alot to my beans!

Edit...nope, I've had cold pinto beans in a salad.

Wonderful post! Thank you so much!

Stocking up on oil - absolutely! Olive or coconut or all of the good ones. We'll need the nutrients and the healthy fats, as well as need them for preparing food.

In the past I lived in the country and had chickens, ducks, etc. I've seen them add the "bloom" though I didn't know the name for it. What a wise post you have made! I was reading yesterday about preserving eggs and one direction was specifically not to wash first. Now I know why! Thanks!

Macaroni and cheese made with powdered cheese would be easy - add powdered milk to the cheese powder, don't pour off quite all the cooking water from the pasta, then mix in the cheese/milk mixture. Would be heavenly to those starved for "normal" foods and tastes.

Love the foods available to you in your UK store - and all the references in this thread to vinegar use - vinegar is so healthy, providing minerals we need.

Thank you for all the suggestions and advice - you are right on top of things! Hope you will join us in Thread: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor (Page 202) You would definitely have great ideas for us, and we might have a few for you!
