Haven't had cornbread in years, but I do like it, especially with butter and honey. Must purchase corn meal for stocking, and be ready to make and enjoy it with the beans. Using cornbread, the rice would not be necessary. Great thinking!

Butter, garlic salt, pepper

Mix them. Rice and beans.
Beans aren’t as bad mixed with something.

Country style ribs are often cheaper and these slow cooked in the crock pot dress up ordinary refried beans.

You add the butter. As it is cooking. If you look at the Traditional method of making curries, you will notice the inclusion of ghee in the dish. Ghee is clarified butter. The point of the butter is to provide a fat base that absorbs the flavours and clings to the dish. So just 'sprinkling spices' in is not as efficient as adding the spice with an emulsifying agent. Like butter, or pork lard, or beef tallow or something along those lines.

Now pork lard and beef tallow any tallow really contains very little water which is why it lasts a very long time on the shelf. Pretty much forever if you used quality meats to produce it in the first place. The quality of the meats is important, because today (in Canada at least) the various producers are allowed to 'add' a certain percentage of water to, let's say bacon. The bacon that has had water added to it makes a far inferior lard.

So think of India and Ghee. Once they clarify (ie remove the water) the butter it lasts a heck of a lot longer because it is the water molecules inside the butter that harbour the bacteria. Ghee looks like a golden soup. It, unlike lard, does not go solid at room temperature (at least not here but where some of you are living it will).

SO the Indians being too poor to afford to eat meat (it's is bullshit they are 'vegetarians', they are by poverty level not by choice), and not liking the idea of killing a cow, they milk them to make Ghee.

It is the ghee that will saturate your dish with whatever flavour/savour you wish to add. Plus it gives you a healthy fat. Don't try this with the semi-plastic margarine. Useless poison. So knowing this, there is no end to what you can flavour your rice and beans with. Just for it's blase taste and health benefits you can always start off with a base of turmeric. It will colour it nicely just don't spill the powder on any sort of kitchen surface that is permeable.

From there, personally, I would modify the rice-a-roni recipe sans the noodles. SInce you have rice and beans...I've always loved that dish myself...

Last time I had some Bush's BBQ beans, I added some rice to it and it was really good.

If you learn how to "temper eggs" then you can whip up a vanilla or chocolate custard from scratch in minutes. With that rich inexpensive dessert, then beans and rice doesn't matter and no one will complain.


If you can't afford quality chocolate, buy some good quality coconut oil. You can make your own chocolate bars but they must stay refrigerated


Because there are no additives, they are not stable but melt easily at room temoerature. They are very rich so a small amount is very satisfying.

Aww, c'mon, anonimalle - go through some of these many suggestions and find a few you are willing to try! You know during the hard times we will have to eat a lot of rice and beans in order to have food, right? I mean, few could afford options every day not including these, and without freezer and refrigerator, at that!

I'm not vegetarian but from what I understand of this crap is you have to mix the right food to get the most out of it.

South Americans were living on potatoes, corn, and beans. Mix those 3 together and you'll fill your belly with stuff your body can use.

Haven't heard of this, but then, my last expedition into bouillion was so long ago it was little squares in gold wrap in a clear plastic tube. Does that date me? LOL

So if you find deals on butter you can make ghee and extend the life of your butter quite simply. Adding anything will make your rice and beans better. So take your pick of spices and run with it.
