I don't see how it could be the liquor unless they are watering it down with tap water.

Another poster said it could be the ice that's the problem, not the liquor.

The tap water in DR is not safe for tourists.

I think it’s funny it’s at the hard rock. And how the hell are you gonna have a Hispanic manager?! They don’t have the capability of caring about human lives, not a good person to manage a place where humans stay overnight. Of course she doesn’t give a shit about the deaths and bought fake booze!

Interesting. If it's wood alcohol (methanol) the symptoms are delayed by 12-18 hours because the poison is the metabolite formic acid, not the alcohol itself.

Methanol is one of the breakdown products of aspartame (Nutrasweet)

I still suspect organophosphate poisoning...in conjunction with the methanol.

Right ... not as a result of the deaths, they don't care if their guest DIE

... BUT the 50%+ drop in future bookings DID rattle their cage.

Chinese liquor? The Chinese have been known to sell wine adulterated with antifreeze...

Even if the source is local or somewhere in LATAM... if not made correctly, its possible to end up with the wrong type of alcohol, methanol instead of ethanol, which will kill you.

I think ingestion of foreign tap water would only result in food poisoning type illness. Not the multi-organ shutdown being described in these deaths. Sounds a lot more like poisoning by antifreeze.

Bad voodoo all around the DR.

There are all these stories from people who have been there on vacation and bad stuff happened to them but they didn't tell anyone, until now.

So instead of testing them for contamination or poison they are just gonna get rid of them all?

Well that or there is a serial killer somwhere on the island, poisoning people.

Throwing out the booze they have won't help if they use more from the same distributors. Glad I dont drink, stuff happens when you drink booze.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16762662

Mexico had a similar problem a few years back.
Traced it to bootleg booze.

There are many reasons not to vacation in a shithole country.

Bootleg liquor

Counterfeit alcohol can sometimes be made or laced with substances such as embalming fluid, battery acid, or methanol, a synthetic chemical that is used in antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid.

Even small amounts of methanol can be toxic, if not lethal, to humans, says Bilello.

“It can cause a variety of symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, blindness, and even death,” he said. Sometimes, this can happen after just one drink.

“[Methanol] is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, and in the liver, enzymes convert alcohol into formaldehyde, and formaldehyde is subsequently converted to formic acid, which is highly toxic,” Kobilinsky told the Cut. Formic acid will prevent your body from using oxygen, which will cause your blood to become acidified. This, Kobilinsky said, is when your body starts to shut down.

“The heart will pump faster, blood pressure will increase, and the victim will breathe more rapidly, trying to acquire more oxygen into their lungs,” he told the Cut. “There are neurological effects as well, and the toxicity will also affect contractility of the heart muscle, causing heart failure. This can result in pulmonary edema and acute respiratory distress.”
