What happens when the two hemispheres of the brain can't communicate with each other? Is the patient now in two minds, rather than one?
And if so, does he know it?
On the surface, split-brain patients seem pretty normal. They eat, sleep, remember, laugh, play, and go to work.
But the devil's in the details.
It turns out that the left and right hemispheres sometimes have very different agendas.
Sometimes this is because the left hemisphere (more specifically the left pre-frontal cortex) is the seat of happiness and positive feelings, while the right pre-frontal cortex is prone to grumpiness and depression.
Throw into the mix the fact that the left hemisphere feels and controls the whole right side of the body and the right hemisphere feels and controls the whole left side of the body, and you get some pretty freaky outcomes.
