MASS ARRESTS in NYC - at least 70 people arrested at climate change protest outside New York Times building

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) -- Dozens of climate change protesters were arrested after they held a die-in in the street outside the New York Times building and climbed a canopy of the building during a rally in Midtown.

Police told 1010 WINS that 70 people were arrested at the protest near 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue Saturday afternoon. Police said some of the protesters had lied down and blocked traffic.

Citizen App video and other images from the scene show protesters lying in the street and several more climbing the canopy of the Times building while waving flags and unveiling banners. More banners were hung on the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Guardian reporter Amanda Holpuch said one banner they unfurled demanded that the Times use "climate emergency" instead of "climate change."

A spokeswoman for Extinction Rebellion, Eve Mosher, said the group wants the media to report on "the climate emergency'' so that "people can start pushing for more radical responses.''

A Times spokeswoman said in an email that no national news organization devotes more resources
