My best friend is a Kiwi. He moved back to NZ 20 years ago to have his family, mostly, and I kid you not, to take advantage of the free healthcare for the birth of his children. He’s not a grifter, either, but rather quite industrious , yet very very frugal. He owns his home and property outright, with no debt. Ironically, our son was born only a few years after, here in the US, and my out-of-pocket expense (with fairly poor insurance at the time), was zero. I, however, owe just about the same on my property now as i did then, a substantial amount.

I believe it’s a way of life there, doing more with less.

The country is a bit of a dichotomy. It’s breathtakingly beautiful on the one hand and sparsely populated.

It used to be a paradise.

On the other hand, personal freedoms you take for granted in the US are not supported there. Handguns have been heavily regulated for some time and now, I believe, they’re coming for the rifles.

Possessing a video copy of the mosque shooting is enough to get you arrested. Forget about freedom of speech. Accept the official story or face the consequences.

The continuing quality of life is really and truly dependent on the generosity of the political swing of the government that’s currently in power.
