Football fandom turns Beyond Meat exec carnivorous as he’s arrested for biting a man’s nose
It could be costly. Douglas Ramsey would be forced to repay a pro-rated portion of his $450,000 sign-on bonus “if for any reason his employment terminates within one year of his start date.”

I’m sure there will be so many puns….

Ornate Byzantine floor mosaic discovered by Palestinian farmer
Archaeologists believe the find in an olive grove in the Gaza Strip dates from 5th-7th century AD

An ornate Byzantine floor mosaic showing colourful birds and other animals has been discovered by chance in Gaza after a Palestinian farmer planted new trees on his land.
Salman al-Nabahin unearthed the mosaic pavement, thought to date from the fifth to the seventh century AD, six months ago while working in his olive orchard in Bureij refugee camp, about half a mile from the border with Israel.
Trying to understand why some trees had not properly taken root, Nabahin said he and his son began digging. Then the son’s axe hit something hard and unfamiliar in appearance.

Spider crashes Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, finds instant fame on web

An uninvited critter somehow made it to the service at Westminster Abbey, catching a ride atop the late monarch’s coffin and burrowing itself in a wreath of flowers and foliage cut from the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

Footage on social media showed the spider scurrying across a note written by King Charles III, which read: “In loving and devoted memory. Charles R.” The arachnid eventually disappeared from sight, back into the bouquet never to be seen again.

Others hailed “the little guy” for its bravery, stepping out as much of the nation fell silent and ground to a halt Monday. The spider, it seemed, quickly won the hearts of eagle-eyed social media watchers who hailed its presence. “God save the Royal Spider,” read one tweet.

Love it.

Re: Light of the World. — Be the Light.
Maarten Schmidt, the father of quasars, dies at age 92

the first person to measure the distance to a quasar. His groundbreaking work in the 1960’s greatly expanded the size of the known universe, providing one of the first clues that the Big Bang theory was correct. Schmidt died on Sept. 17 at his home in Fresno, California. He was 92 years old.

The story of quasars began several years before Schmidt focused his attention on them. Starting in the 1950s, astronomers identified several sources of radio emissions in the sky. Many of those radio sources could be assigned to known objects, like bright stars or nearby galaxies. But some remained frustratingly elusive, having no visible counterpart. Whatever these strange radio sources were, they appeared as point-like objects, indicating that they were either huge in size but incredibly far away or small and nearby.

Astronomers, never slow to assign a name to a new category of celestial phenomenon, quickly designated these radio sources “quasi-stellar objects,” which was shortened to quasars.

After several weeks of deep contemplation and much nervous pacing around his home, Schmidt realized what he was looking at: a perfectly normal galaxy. All the emission lines from all the usual elements were there, like hydrogen and helium, but they were simply shifted far down toward the red end of the spectrum.

Quasars: The luminous cores of distant galaxies

Schmidt argued for another interpretation in his Nature paper describing his discovery: the Big Bang. Distant objects are pulled away from us due to the expansion of space itself, which also causes a redshift. It was this realization that allowed Edwin Hubble to lay the observational groundwork for the Big Bang theory in the 1920s. But besides Hubble’s insight, there was little more to anchor the Bang in observations. And so astronomers continued to debate its validity.

“We already have DNA from the 18th dynasty mummies, from Akhenaten to Amenhotep II or III, and there are two unnamed mummies labeled KV21a and b,” he told Newsweek. “In October we will be able to announce the discovery of the mummy of Ankhesenamun, Tutankhamun’s wife, and her mother, Nefertiti.”

Neferneferuaten Nefertiti ruled alongside her husband, Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, some 3,300 years ago during a period of affluence and immense social turmoil. Amenhotep IV converted the country from polytheism to a monotheistic cult dedicated to the sun’s disk, Aton. He changed his name to Akhenaten, meaning “beneficial to Aten,” and moved the capital from Thebes to a hastily built city named Akhetaten, meaning “horizon of the god Aten.” After his death, Egypt’s traditional culture was restored and most monuments to Akhenaten were defaced or destroyed. He was excluded from the lists of rulers maintained by the kingdom and the details of his and Nefertiti’s burials were obscured.

“I am still looking for two things: [Nefertiti’s] grave and her body,” Hawass said. “I really believe that Nefertiti ruled Egypt for three years after Akhenaten’s death under the name of Smenkhkare.”

A New Island Just Appeared in the Pacific Ocean

This fledgling patch of land spawned out of a seafloor ridge teeming with highest density of underwater volcanoes on the planet. Known as the Home Reef seamount, the underwater mountain stretches between New Zealand and Tonga.

Unfortunately, this little guy probably isn’t going to stick around very long, with NASA warning that islands created by underwater volcanoes are typically short-lived. But there are some exceptions, like one island created from the nearby Late’iki Volcano in 1995 that stuck around for a whole 25 years — though that's not very long in geological terms.

Mexico earthquake sparks ‘desert tsunami’ in Death Valley cave 1,500 miles away in Nevada

The 7.6 magnitube quake shook the states of Colima and Michoacán in western Mexico on Monday (19 September). The Devil’s Hole cave system in Death Valley National Park, which is located in eastern California and stretches into parts of Nevada, is around 1,500 miles to the north.

Earlier this week, 22 minutes after the earthquake struck in Mexico, waves measuring four feet thrashed around the cave system.

“On September 19th, 2022 a large earthquake that rocked the Pacific Coast of Mexico made waves in Devil’s Hole—literally,” Death Valley National Park wrote in a post on Facebook on Wednesday. “The 7.6 magnitude event struck near the Colima-Michoacan border at 11:05 AM local time (PDT; 1:05 PM at the epicenter). NPS staff were onsite conducting research and witnessed the effects firsthand. Within five minutes, the normally still water in the pool began slowly moving, and soon built to waves several feet high.”
