Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez grilled Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan about the bank's involvement in the caging of children at the US Mexico border and the Dakota Access Pipeline during a House hearing regarding the bank's practices.
As Sloan sat before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, Ocasio-Cortez told him: 'I am interested in the human rights abuses and environmental disasters that some say are financed by your bank, Wells Fargo.'
She went on to cite an opinion piece published by The Guardian in April 2017 that accused Wells Fargo of 'pursuing profits without principles' by investing in for-profit immigration detention centers, private prisons and loan shark payday lending schemes.
'Is it true Wells Fargo invested or financed in some of these industries?' the freshman Democrat asked.
Sloan responded by saying that Wells Fargo was terminating relationships with two private prison companies, GEO Group and CoreCivic, both of which have been involved with immigration detention.
He said one exit was finalized and the other was still pending, but he couldn't remember which was which.
