The writers have lost the plot because they're trying to write beyond their limited and well exhausted source materials. They're merely guessing now and it shows. Their character arcs and storylines are starting to repeat into stagnation. At any rate, 'The best-laid schemes of mice and men' is no match for the Cosmic Joke™
