The underlying Hebrew of hell is "Sheol" in the Bible, it literally means grave, but because the christianity of organized religion doesn't really base it's teachings on the Bible alone, and mixes elements of paganism with it, that's how you end up with such damnable heresy. It's just like the heresy that God who the scriptures define as "love" would torture for ever those who don't accept Him. Nope, can be read into certain passages in the Bible, but when comparing scripture with scripture it becomes clear that's not what's being said. When I was a kid I was taught that the reason he descended into hell was to witness. It’s been something I’ve been pondering lately since hearing about the movie Mel Gibson is producing about Christ’s resurrection that is coming out in three years. Supposedly this is going to be touched on (his descending into hell) at some point in the movie.

Jesus did not go to hell. Hell is judgment, there is no hope for people there, there is no reason for him to go there.
