Who is going to buy all their plasticrap?
When the corporations get their wish, and 40% of their employees are replaced by automation - AI and otherwise:

Who is going to pay $50 for a night at the movies?

Who is going to buy a $50K truck?

Who is going to take family vacations?

Who is going to spend $1760 for a Samsung S10?

Who is going to buy their plasticrap?

(Want to see plasticrap first hand? Go to the toy department at Target.)

----------------------------------------------------

"In public, many executives wring their hands over the negative consequences that artificial intelligence and automation could have for workers. They take part in panel discussions about building “human-centered A.I.” for the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” — Davos-speak for the corporate adoption of machine learning and other advanced technology — and talk about the need to provide a safety net for people who lose their jobs as a result of automation.

But in private settings, including meetings with the leaders of the many consulting and technology firms whose pop-up storefronts line the Davos Promenade, these executives tell a different story: They are racing to automate their own work forces to stay ahead of the competition, with little regard for the impact on workers."

Re: Who is going to buy all their plasticrap?
When Jacquard invented the mechanical loom in France, the weaving craftsmen said the same thing, his workshop was invaded and he had to flee to England to save his life.
His mechanical loom flourished in England and the French weavers failed because they could no longer compete with the quality and prices of tissues manufactured in England

The new technologies will extinguish old professions and create new professions, and labor relations will change to keep the economy running ...

When the age of the cars began the age of the chariots ended. Well ... we will live under a new paradigm, we will live with plastics and A.I.

No doubt, we will live under a new paradigm. But, we are not talking about a mechanical loom. We are talking about General Artificial Intelligence. It will learn without us.
The "new professions" will not absorb the tremendous loss of jobs that people are doing today.

Ultimately there will be no "labor relations" because there will be no human labor.

The point is that, if all the blue-collar class is jobless, then there will be no consumption - of goods nor services.

They are shooting themselves in the foot and they don't seem to understand that. It is puzzling.

But, don't take my word for it:

"Bengio said there were many ways deep learning software could be used for good...

But he said there was also a risk that the implementation of AI would cause job losses on a scale, and at a speed, that’s different from what’s happened with other technological innovations. He said governments needed to be proactive in thinking about these risks, including considering new ways to redistribute wealth within society.

"Technology, as it gets more powerful, outside of other influences, just leads to more concentration of power and wealth," he said. "That is bad for democracy, that is bad for social justice, and the general well-being of most people."

And, then you have the "1984 scenario".

(Bloomberg) -- Yoshua Bengio, a Canadian computer scientist who helped pioneer the techniques underpinning much of the current excitement around artificial intelligence, is worried about China’s use of AI for surveillance and political control.

Bengio, who is also a co-founder of Montreal-based AI software company Element AI, said he was concerned about the technology he helped create being used for controlling people’s behavior and influencing their minds.

"This is the 1984 Big Brother scenario," he said in an interview. "I think it’s becoming more and more scary."

Weather permitting I prefer to be on my hybrid bike. That way my car lasts much longer. Car is 12 years old and still in good shape. Plus I dropped collision and comprehensive off of the insurance. No way I'm buying a new one any time soon.

I wish that I had a hybrid bike. It is a good idea. I have an old Specialized mountain bike. It is OK for local travel, but not optimal.
