In a few of the neighbourhoods I frequent, even the renters have decent (mostly perennial based) boulevards. Spineless, fruiting shrubs with jersusalem artichokes, edible ferns (fiddleheads), rhubarb (very shade tolerant), asparagus, lovage and horseradish come to mind. As I stated above, there is a lot of amaranth in the boardwalk garden strip. [link to www.newwestcity.ca (secure)] |

While it's nice to have such books, it's even better to get a plant identifying app and starting using it in nature whenever you have free time. You can learn a lot. I have been doing this a couple of times and I can already find 7~8 edible plants in the mountains quickly. There are tons of food in nature. Start doing this, it's worth the time. shmosher |

True and the books are climate specific. So...use the app's while we still have the apps. Same goes with fungi. Know your terrain. It's better in your head then in a book or an app. KNowledge is the lightest thing you can carry. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78526532 United States 08/10/2021 03:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Easy toilet when the water is shut off: Buy one of those emergency toilets that are only a ten gallon bucket with a toilet seat fit on top that can be lifted when needed. When I bought mine about ten years ago, it cost $12.00. Probably pricier now, but any bucket and an old toilet seat would probably work. Buy some cheap kitchen garbage bags to serve as liners, and some cheap cat litter to serve as absorbant/clumping material. If you don't want to go the kitty litter route, stock up on a few large bottles of lysol to use in cleaning the bucket regularly. PS-- tested and proven to work. Several years ago, we had a really cold night during the winter when almost all the pipes to my upstairs bathroom froze solid, then burst. We didn't have a functioning toilet for almost a month with all the repairs that needed to be made. This little camp toilet with the kitty litter worked like a charm, requiring little water except to clean it every few days. I used the kitchen garbage bags as liners and the bucket rarely needed to be "cleaned" (no leak through), but I cleaned it any way just because it's a toilet and you can't be too safe with those kind of germs. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77547432 Canada 08/18/2021 05:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was looking at a loaf to stale bread and I remembered something. I worked on and off for an inventor for over a decade. A very odd Swedish fellow, lifelong bachelor. So he used to buy rye bread at great discount as it reached it's expiry date. SLice it thin and dry it on racks over his woodstove or in his closet dehydrator. He would also, (small batch) dry it on low in his oven while doing other things. He kept it in tin cans and munched on it like 'ryvita' for months on end. So if you are a fan of 'cracker like ' crisp breads...here is a cheap way to make your own. Sometimes the local baker would call with 'take it all away or I'll chuck it'. The denser the bread the better, seeded even better. Here are other ideas on storable, dry/crisp bread you can make yourself. [link to friendsoftheearth.uk (secure)] Make sure it 'snaps' before storing or it might rot from the moisture trapped inside. |

I'd rather have an illegal substance and take a salt grain size for the same effect. I do actually include it in my preps. QUite a bit since I don't like stimulants. Cleaner stimulant then caffeine with less body load if you do it correct (like a 2 espresso buzz). Plus, if you need to stay up all night clear headed...beats coffee. Heck militaries have fought on it, most AF pilots are on a variation (like when your overhyped pilots killed a bunch of my countrymen and used it as an excuse). Never goes bad.
