Depending on the size of your city trying to get things like this [link to www.timescolonist.com (secure)] going, is a good start. Victoria has 92k pop. or so. Vancouver has grants to tend boulevards [link to www.vancouverfoodpolicycouncil.ca (secure)]
Good way to meet neighbours, edible landscaping competitions anyone? In a few of the neighbourhoods I frequent, even the renters have decent (mostly perennial based) boulevards. Spineless, fruiting shrubs with jersusalem artichokes, edible ferns (fiddleheads), rhubarb (very shade tolerant), asparagus, lovage and horseradish come to mind. As I stated above, there is a lot of amaranth in the boardwalk garden strip. [link to www.newwestcity.ca (secure)]

Someone mentioned about a book about wild edibles.
While it's nice to have such books, it's even better to get a plant identifying app and starting using it in nature whenever you have free time.

You can learn a lot. I have been doing this a couple of times and I can already find 7~8 edible plants in the mountains quickly. There are tons of food in nature. Start doing this, it's worth the time.

True and the books are climate specific. So...use the app's while we still have the apps. Same goes with fungi. Know your terrain. It's better in your head then in a book or an app. KNowledge is the lightest thing you can carry.

I don't think there has ever been a time in history where governments have been so hellbent on restricting pain relief for the people.

I've been publishing this thread in various comment sections on yt and what not because it is (unlike most of GLP) cohesive and salient and pertinent. My last avatar (St Lance) is est morte. Now what is the likely timing of the Guardian [link to www.theguardian.com (secure)]
Tended towards our topics in the same timeframe? I give my time and mind for free because I love GuLP and all of you. Does the Guardian watch us or do we/I watch the Guardian? It gets complex. In many cases I could not care less if GuLP is 2 days before the news. In the cae of this thread I pray they are 2 days before but I, sigh, do not think nor type so.
Stay salty, stay frosty, stay salient. We are the cutting edge. Make the views worth it. God Bless ya'll and lets find and dig for...MOAR!

One of the best things someone prepping can do is learn about natural remedies with every day weeds growing in around your yard or in parks. For instance I see a lot of people mentioning bandages and ointment for burns burdock leaves are great for wrapping around an arm or a finger for a bad burn. Just google how to use burdock leaves

Yes, knowledge is better then books or apps. Burdock and plantain are fine. JUST HOLD THE thoughts (oops caps) in your head.

Skill acquisition. Every summer we learn new things.

Seems simple but if you don't have the skills or pack the gear your options will be limited.

This year we learned how to ride horses.

Others learned how to play Pokemon.

The reason us elders prepare is to not give up but to pass our knowledge on to our youth so that they can survive the unbearable times they will be having to deal with.
There is always a ray of hope when we can do this for others~

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Easy toilet when the water is shut off:

Buy one of those emergency toilets that are only a ten gallon bucket with a toilet seat fit on top that can be lifted when needed. When I bought mine about ten years ago, it cost $12.00. Probably pricier now, but any bucket and an old toilet seat would probably work.

Buy some cheap kitchen garbage bags to serve as liners, and some cheap cat litter to serve as absorbant/clumping material. If you don't want to go the kitty litter route, stock up on a few large bottles of lysol to use in cleaning the bucket regularly.

PS-- tested and proven to work. Several years ago, we had a really cold night during the winter when almost all the pipes to my upstairs bathroom froze solid, then burst. We didn't have a functioning toilet for almost a month with all the repairs that needed to be made. This little camp toilet with the kitty litter worked like a charm, requiring little water except to clean it every few days. I used the kitchen garbage bags as liners and the bucket rarely needed to be "cleaned" (no leak through), but I cleaned it any way just because it's a toilet and you can't be too safe with those kind of germs.

SEnd the youngsters to basic Permaculture Intro classes. I did with my daughter and a woman who asked if she could go along. 2.5 weeks in Bali learning. Find them closer to home is what we all decided after...lol. I guess I don't know any young people who would find it unbearable not wearing brands. The rural-urban divide.

There are many signals pointing to Sept through May being very volatile so checking preps (which includes tossing older materials) as a form of 'September Cleaning' is prudent at present. Taking advantage of the late summer harvests of everything is great!

It almost broke my heart to throw out some older preps (not freeze dried/canned in the last decade...but it allowed for more to be added anyhow!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I was looking at a loaf to stale bread and I remembered something. I worked on and off for an inventor for over a decade. A very odd Swedish fellow, lifelong bachelor. So he used to buy rye bread at great discount as it reached it's expiry date. SLice it thin and dry it on racks over his woodstove or in his closet dehydrator. He would also, (small batch) dry it on low in his oven while doing other things. He kept it in tin cans and munched on it like 'ryvita' for months on end. So if you are a fan of 'cracker like ' crisp breads...here is a cheap way to make your own.

Sometimes the local baker would call with 'take it all away or I'll chuck it'. The denser the bread the better, seeded even better. Here are other ideas on storable, dry/crisp bread you can make yourself.

Make sure it 'snaps' before storing or it might rot from the moisture trapped inside.

Consider CAFFINE.

Coffee beans, ground coffee have stored.

Instant coffee, there are numerous great instant coffee.

My two favs are KAVA but has tripled in price. For 1/3 of the price one can buy 3 jars of organic instant coffee. Kava adds potassium to make their instant coffee LOW ACID.

DIY Kava= instant coffee + potassium/antiacid tablet

Adding salt or baking soda, just a pinch makes the coffee taste better as well.

My other fav instant coffee is found at hispanic stores. LEGAL is the name & priced reasonable.

CAFFEINE PILLS might be a temporary solution.

Don't forget cream. Kroger has okay powdered cream.

Anything is better than no cream for me. coffee4

Many years ago (40+ years), I learned to enjoy coffee just as it comes. No cream or sweeteners. That way, I could happily drink it if there were no additives available. I still drink it plain black daily, as I prefer it that way.

Instant coffee is a hard sell for me, but I will drink it if there is no real coffee available.

I'd rather have an illegal substance and take a salt grain size for the same effect. I do actually include it in my preps. QUite a bit since I don't like stimulants. Cleaner stimulant then caffeine with less body load if you do it correct (like a 2 espresso buzz). Plus, if you need to stay up all night clear headed...beats coffee. Heck militaries have fought on it, most AF pilots are on a variation (like when your overhyped pilots killed a bunch of my countrymen and used it as an excuse). Never goes bad. Just don't get addicted to it!
