I do have dried milk in storage, one of the few things that I don't want to drink but is apparantly an essential.

Want a really tasty treat?

Take any tasteless cereal (corn flakes, grape nuts, shredded wheat) and pour apple juice over it instead of milk.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM it's good! banana2

I dunno...it just happened one day. I usually stay signed in but I was no longer.

I typed in my email address & password & just came back to the main GLP page (but not logged in).

I tried typing in an incorrect password and it took me to the sign on page (rather than the GLP main page)...so it can tell if my password is correct or not.

Then I clicked on "forgot my password" and changed it...went to email and clicked on the link...still not logged in.

Tried the new password...still not logged in.

I must have pissed off somebody.

WOOHOOOO! I love it! :)

Oil burns.

You can take a skillet, pout a little oil (or shortening) in it. Twist up a few pieces of paper towel for wicks, drop in the oil and light.

Poof, you have a burner to cook on.

You need to use a skillet/pan with a lid so you can snuff out the fire when y'r done cooking.
 Quoting: Mental Case

I believe one of my sisters, the one who went into the Army, over a decade ago, she told the rest of our family how soldiers in the field are supposed to heat up their MREs. There's a chemical mixture that is to mixed together that produces a strong exothermic reaction. Not exactly enough to severely burn a human, but enough to quickly heat up a MRE's contents so you're not eating up to ice cold MREs potentially out in the middle of nowhere.
 Quoting: darkwolf007

Is this something available to the public? Or is it only in MREs we'd have to get from an Army/Navy store?

I once found bags that will heat a can of food - can't even remember where I got them.
 Quoting: Pooka

It is sold as an MRE heater but just needs wqter of any kind to activate. I imagine all kind of food could be used under severe conditiona.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I had a shelter idea of mine CONFIRMED!

A couple years ago I was watching the TV show "ALONE" and I was trying to think up the best winter shelter for those conditions. Easiest to build with the most protection from the elements (winter was closing in).

I thought of making a tee-pee with trees 3 or 4 inches in diameter. But not just the frame of the tee-pee...every inch of the tee-pee would be enclosed by the wood poles (trees). Make a stone fireplace with chimney...then dig a mud pit & add water, dirt & grass clippings & cover the entire tee-pee with a foot thick mud (sod), After it all dried you could cover it with a tarp to protect from rain washing the mud away.

Welp, yesterday I was watching life-below-zero and a guy had a sod hut for emergency just incase his house ever burned down...the hut was constructed almost exactly to my idea banana2

I figure a guy living near the arctic circle far away from anybody should know best.

(But he had a 55 gal. drum & stove pipe for a wood stove)

The biggest consideration I was thinking about my shelter idea was fire wood. You don't want to kill yourself gathering tons of fire wood so the shelter has to be small and well insulated.

So a minimal amount of wood will do. I would also put large stones around the stove to hold the heat for the longest time possible.

I live in Minnesota so I think about crap like this :D

Be certain never to use river stones or from other water sources, as they literally contain amounts of water which, when heated, will turn to steam and explode the stones.

It's late in the game. I would try a local pawn shop or coin shop or gold/silver shop.

Most places are sold out or not selling until market open tonight. They expect the price to jump as soon as the market opens.

For silver look on the bar or round to say 3 things

- 999 fine (9999 for gold...9995 is not good enough)!
- one troy ounce (one ounce is not good enough)
- 31.1 grams

Check how long the shop has been in business if you can...you want a reputable dealer. They should charge a fair mark up over spot price because they need to eat too. 2 or 3 dollars per ounce is fair if you're only buying a few...if you're buying 100 then the mark up should be lower.

one ounce - 28 grams

One TROY ounce - 31.1 grams.

You always want to see TROY OUNCE stamped into your gold or silver! Actually stamped into the metal...and look at the edges to make sure nothing has been shaved off.

You can always go to kitco dot com or jmbullion dot com to see the current "spot price" of silver.

The dealer will do that and then calculate their % fee over spot price and sell it to you for that price.

I would suggest against any "collectables"...tell them you just want silver.

Junk silver (silver US coins with a date of 1964 or earlier) is good to. Not nickels or pennies...only dimes quarters, 50 cent pieces and silver dollars.

And combination of face value of $1.40 equals one troy ounce.

so 14 dimes - 1 troy ounce

4 quarters and 4 dimes = 1 troy ounce

2 quarters and 9 dimes = 1 troy ounce (etc etc etc).

Thank you all for the advice on buying silver. I'm copy/pasting to save to most assuredly use. Love that so many of you obviously have prepared, and know how to do it.

Bless this group of people, Lord, and help them in their further preparations, keep them safe, spare them what may be coming. Thank you, Lord, for their friendship. Amen

Be careful with silver. Commodities are a whole 'nother animal than stocks.

There is no market cap. There is no shortage in supply. The mines will ramp up production when the prices go up, they'll sell all they have, plus they'll sell forward production.

The government intervened when the billionaire hunt bros. (billionaires way back in the day...crazy rich) tried to corner the market and while they were so rich they couldn't destroy them completely, they did a lot of damage, and the hunts took a VERY large haircut and it took ..really i think more than a decade to finalize it all.

This is NOT a stock. Very hard to corner commodities.

Sure, it will go up for a bit, but it will come back down quickly when they want it to.

Don't mess around with money that means something to do. Don't buy a run up, and take profits.

Don't think it's tiny little investors going to topple the giant with their sheer numbers. We are gnats. As I posted on another thread earlier, the govt will just get out their regulatory can of raid and spray us all dead.

There are better hills to die on.

That said, if you want to buy right away and take profits as you go, that's one thing. Bear in mind the historical high for silver was $50 oz. If you want to buy for a rainy day and hold, that's ok too. But anyone telling you to buy and hold no matter what with silver .. or ANY commodity... just doesn't understand how those markets work.

Stocks are one thing, they are finite, there are only so many stocks available to be had. Commodities are not finite, and when prices go up, they can afford more ways to produce, except in cases of total crop failures or animal disease, and still these are temporary in nature...but silver? There's plenty in the mines, and the miners will be THRILLED to go into production and sell it at higher prices.
