Wow that sucks!

So you live on some savings until this passes...no major deal, right?

Yes and no. The savings are tied up with the bank and real estate company to cover closing costs. I have enough left over for about 3 weeks. Ideally, the government shutdown will end by Friday or Monday and none of this will happen. But if this doesn't happen, then the house will come off contract and we might not get it even if the government reopens in a few weeks, which would leave us stranded until we find something else.

I'm not completely freaked out right now, but I am trying to plan for multiple contingencies. Anyof which will use up a lot of our saved-up money that otherwise wouldn't have been spent without the shut-down.

Ugh So stressful! Really hope everything works out with the new house.

I'm just posting this to remind people that some of us are seriously effected. I'm not asking for anything other than prayers.


I have always been 'cursed' with horrible luck, and if there is an exception to something, then I somehow always fall in it.

I am one of the very very few affected by the shutdown, and I'm not even a government employee. If the government doesn't start back up by next week, I will be homeless. I don't work for the government, nor do I receive any benefits from the government.

BUT, I cancelled my lease for my current apartment, because I am buying my first house. We are closing next week. The loan is a federal government loan, and they have informed my wife and I that they refuse to issue the loan as long as the government is shut down. So, I will be packing up everything I own into a moving truck and parking it somewhere until the government reopens (assuming the house I am buying isn't sold to someone else by then). The worst part is the loan is simply backed by the government. All the paperwork is done, but they are refusing to sign it until the government is funded.

For what it's worth, I 100% blame the democrats. But, just keep in mind that some of us can be very-oddly effected by a government shut down, so I do hope it is resolved soon with Trump coming out on top.

When North Korea is easier to negotiate with than the democrat party, then something is horribly wrong with them.

I genuinely hate AirBnB, but they do often have halfway decent monthly rates.

Wanna hear about the time I got a cute mid-range cottage on there...got there and shortly discovered that the building was actually condemned by the city and the crazy lady next door had hooked up the water via a hose, etc, had "repaired" the place in some sort of paste and construction paper schizophrenia-induced psychosis, and was renting it out on AirBnB.

The city we are moving to isn't very airbnb friendly. Ironically, it is friendly to homicides, kidnappings, and muggings. (we bought a house on the outskirts of town). Plus, we have 4 cats. I will keep it in mind, and I'll look at some searches.

See if you can rent the house you wanted to buy untill the loan comes through.

I can't. This is a luxury apartment, and I had to pay 2 months rent to break the lease and give a 60 day notice. They already have it booked for a move-in day for someone in 2 weeks.

Hahahaha - was this in Texas? I've heard a similar tale...

It's true. I am, like another poster, in the mortgage business. FHA is basically shut down. Your mortgage company can't get what's known as a "case number" while the shutdown is in effect. We also can't order tax transcripts from the IRS to verify income. Both of those are temporary deal killers.
